Magistrate rejects Welikada Police request

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday issued an order preventing the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) march from entering the Fort Police Division.
The Magistrate made this order pursuant to a request made by the Fort Police.
The Magistrate stated that IUSF will not be allowed to engage in any violent acts, cause harm to properties of Police personnel, and engage in other unlawful activities.
They have been barred from entering York Street, Lower Chatham Street, Bank Street, Hospital Street, President’s Street and Mudalige Street.
Meanwhile, Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday dismissed the request made by Welikada Police to issue an order to prevent the protest organized by the Inter University Students’ Federation at the Polduwa junction.
The Magistrate observed that if any public disturbance takes place, the police can act as per the powers vested in them.
