Honestly, I haven’t seen Bullets Over Broadway and I don’t know who Dianne Wiest is. BUT, she’s the reason Uma Thurman didn’t win for Pulp Fiction, and that’s enough for my vote. Oh, and it’s a Woody Allen movie, ewwwwwwww….

For my pick I have selected someone because I feel someone else deserved the award, for me Glenn Close should have gotten the award for her truly unstable character.

This was particularly hard for me as though I’m not massively enamoured by many Oscar winning performances I certainly don’t dislike any. I think anyway?
I chose this one in the end because the lovely Judi is only on screen for about eight minutes. Which is mainly quite ridiculous (and I can only imagine how the other nominees in 1998 felt about that one) AND you could also argue that if her performance was so mind blowing, it’s a shame we only get to see it (and her) for eight minutes. I have showers that last longer.

This is a tricky one because, while there are certainly forgettable, award winning turns in older, so-so films, there aren’t really any performances that I actively dislike.
I was tempted to go for Judi Dench for her incredibly brief appearance in “Shakespeare in Love” but she did make an impact and there were no better nominees that year.
I decided to pick an actress who won an Oscar for a single five minute scene in the amazing film “Network”; in a film full of absolutely incredible performances, Straight’s character is completely forgettable and definitely not worthy of a huge award.
Especially since Piper Laurie and Jodie Foster were fellow nominees for “Carrie” and “Taxi Driver”, respectively – they were clearly more deserving!!

Shirley MacLaine – Terms of Endearment
My least favorite Oscar Winning Actress performance is Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment. It’s hard for me to say she doesn’t deserve the award because I haven’t seen any of the other nominated movies that year. She also does what is asked of her pretty well but I don’t like the movie. I found all the characters to be horrible and not endearing at all including her It also lays on the sentimentality very thickly and because I didn’t like the characters I resented that. It’s just not the movie or performance for me. Another one I thought of is Barbra Streisand for Funny Girl but that was actually a tie so Kathryn Hepburn is the true winner in my eyes that year.

Whoopi Goldberg – Ghost
My least favorite Oscar Winner for Best Supporting Actress goes to…. (cue fanfare)…. Whoopi Goldberg. This was for her role as Oda May Brown in Ghost. (1990)..with Patrick Swayze (Sam) and Demi Moore (as Sam’s girlfriend Molly). In this awful 1990 romantic-comedy-drama, Sam is murdered and he comes back to avenge his murder and save girlfriend from danger from the culprit. This after he learns the truth of what happened to him. Goldberg plays a reluctant psychic who gets involved who can hear Swayze’s characters ghost with many “comic” moments,
So read comic as irritating and that’s just the start of my venting (thanks Darren for this opportunity to offload). So I was supershocked in reading she won an Oscar. This rant is in light of the competition… Annette Bening (The Grifters), Lorraine Bracco (GoodFellas), Diane Ladd (Wild at Heart) and Mary McDonnell (Dances with Wolves). And Goldberg’s silly performance which was just plain annoying in every sense of the word.. In fact if anyone deserved a best supporting actress from that film it should have gone to Moore who played Molly . Moore gave a sweet, touching performance (and that pre-Friends haircut everyone wanted way back then). But anyway if you need further ammo to decide on this category, check her performance vs Bracco’s on a certain video sharing channel. And just be as horrified as me when you learn that this was up for 5 Oscars including Best Picture. But luckily it was Kevin Costner.s year as his movie – which he starred directed and produced – Dances with Wolves danced away with 12 nominations and winning 7 including this accolade…paving the way for the travesty that was Waterworld. And that dear readers is another story.

Gwyneth Paltrow – Shakespeare in Love
To be honest, I don’t watch a lot of Oscar films but looking at the list of movies I’ve seen, Shakespeare in Love has always had me head scratching why its gotten the popularity is has. Granted it was a long time ago that I saw it but I don’t remember much of it. With that said, I also think Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t particularly a fantastic actress, which also supports why I feel she’s my least favorite Oscar winning Actress.

Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side
Sandra Bullock won the Academy Award for her performance in 2009’s “The Blind Side.” She played a tough-as-nails Southern pistol-packing Mom who is protective of the kid she finds homeless – and helps him become an NFL star. Michael Oher is shown at the end being drafted – bravo to him! Yes, it’s a true story, and an inspiring one as well. That said, Bullock’s performance is strident and one-note, and the scene where she takes on a group of dangerous young men is cringe-worthy.

Just as I had trouble finding a Best Actress winning performance I could call my favorite, there weren’t many that jumped out as bad or undeserving as I looked through the list. In the end, though, I found one in the Best Supporting Actress category, namely Dame Judi Dench’s performance as Queen Elizabeth I inShakespeare in Love. Now, I love Judi Dench, but when a performance is only eight minutes long, it really ought to be something special. Sure, she was regal and haughty and good as usual, but what about this role warranted an Oscar? This is a case where the Academy knew she deserved at least one Oscar and found an excuse to award it. Maybe I’m just biased against Shakespeare in Love for criminally swiping Best Picture from Saving Private Ryan, but this is another Oscar I don’t think it quite deserved.
