Darren – Movie Reviews 101
Jurassic Park
This is the first movie I remember seeing at the cinema, the effects leave you jaw dropping and still 25 years later it is still flawless. You can watch this movie over and over and still enjoy it. The T-Rex is truly terrifying for the audience especially when I was only about 6 when I saw it.
Kim – Tranquil Dreams
Dual
This is possibly one of the hardest rounds as Steven Spielberg has an endless repertoire of great titles. However, nothing was quite as impressive as Duel. A TV movie that was so fun and suspenseful to watch. Its a car chased by a demonic truck and just manages to not reveal the villain but also put a lot of hints on building the scenario.
E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial
This is a tough one as I adore Spielberg’s movies (especially those from my childhood in the 80s). It’s mainly between E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial & the Indiana Jones films. I think most people will choose Indiana Jones (probably Raiders). I think Jones, as a character, is truly iconic and one of my favorites. However, I’m going to choose E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial as my favorite Spielberg film. I’m a sci-fi lover. Sci-fi will always win with me. 🙂

It’s a goddamned classic. I mean, dude, it’s Raiders. K, it hasn’t got a phat shark, but it’s easily Spielberg at his blockbusting, high-octane adventure best.

Despite being a talented and such well known director, I must admit I don’t “love” too many (or any) Steven Spielberg movies. In fact, there’s more movies I really like that had ‘involvement’ from him, whilst directed by someone else (like the superb J.J Abrams for example). But anyway Jaws is definitely a SS (Steven Spielberg I mean, nothing to do with Hitler) movie I think is pretty ground-breaking and very cool and something I own on DVD and would be pretty willing to go home and watch tonight. Jaws is great! It’s one of those films that will never really be topped (not even by The Meg!) and thanks to many clever, tense and scary scenes the ‘Berg & Benchley duo have pretty much ruined swimming in the sea for everyone. And obviously we have the score which is a genuine contender for ‘most famous film music’ ever but we all know that surely.
Fun fact too, Jaws is one of the most misquotes movies of all time. A lot of us say “we’re gonna need a bigger boat” – but the true quote is “YOU’RE gonna need a bigger boat”. Fascinating I know.

Jurassic Park
Steven Spielberg is one of my favorite directors of all time. While he has directed many great films, like Jaws, the Indiana Jones Trilogy, Schindler’s List, Minority Report and many many others, there is one that instantly jumps to the top of my list: Jurassic Park. I watched this film all the time when I was younger and it never gets old to this day, even after at least several dozen watches. The action is incredible, the script is thought-provoking, the cast is memorable, the music is moving and the special effects are awe-inspiring. I could go on and on but really if you’ve seen Jurassic Park then you know what I’m talking about. If not, then you don’t know what you’re missing.

Saving Private Ryan
One of the best war films and among the best overall films ever made. Spielberg does an amazing job capturing the feeling of real close combat and we are treated to an experience unlike any other as we are taken as close as we can get to a real battle. The cast is superb with Hanks, Burns, Pepper, Davies, Goldberg, Diesel, Sizemore, and Ribisi all wonderful as the men chosen for such a mission. Each of them is made real and unique by their mannerisms and opinions which help the diverse dialog about the overall thematic debate to constantly take place. The cinematography is amazing and it helps enhance the patriotic and grandeur feeling of it all. It’s completely unacceptable that this film lost Best Picture at the Oscars to Shakespeare in Love (1998) because there is no rational reason for that to have happened. At least they had the forethought to award Spielberg the award for Best Director.

Catch Me If You Can
My favorite Steven Spielberg movie is “Catch Me If You Can”. It may not be Spielberg’s absolute best, but it is one of his most entertaining and fascinating. It is based on a true story, which is incredible in itself since the story concerns a mere teenager who impersonates a lawyer, a doctor and a co-pilot. It has such great actors there as Leonardo DiCaprio, Christopher Walken, Tom Hanks, Nathalie Baye, Amy Adams and Martin Sheen, and the story comes off as emotional too since DiCaprio makes his character sympathetic and we know about his not exactly ideal upbringing. The film makes one think that anything is possible in this world if you brave and confident enough.

Jurassic Park
This is such a hard question! If I was asked what Steve Spieblerg’s best movie is I would say Schindler’s List for sure. I love the first and third Indiana Jones movies. I love ET and Close Encounters. What do I pick? Well, I have to go with the movie that made me fall in love with movies- Jurassic Park. I have hated all the sequels but this first movie had gravitas, great characters, amazing visuals and a great story. It’s how you make blockbuster entertainment. Come to think of it Jurassic Park and Schindler’s List came out the same year so maybe I should just say 1993 is my favorite movies for Spielberg. LOL

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Steven Spielberg may have made a lot of grand, Oscar worthy pics but his first film to feature the iconic Fedora sporting hero is a fun, exciting adventure film that you can easily watch over and over again.
Harrison Ford was born to play the awesome central role and John Williams’ score is magnificent

Artificial Intelligence
My fave of Spielberg’s movies has to be about that loveable character who tugged by heart strings with his titular movie. Not ET, but AI Artificial Intelligence (2001) (link here ) . Its’ a story of a Mecha boy, David played by a wee Haley Joel Osment who is banished to the woods with his Mecha teddy bear. This as its feared David is dangerous after some misunderstandings and near accidents. However, David hopes to become a real boy and hopes to regain his mother’s love. And it is definitely a heart breaking yet heart warming movie in one. His scenes after his imprinting with his mother prove a Mecha can love (unless you sceptical and call it jolly good imprinting) will tug your heartstrings and his quest to become a real boy heartbreaking til the end. The final scenes I’ll let you find out for yourself, but will say that the Mechas appear to be the only ones with real emotion in this film. With Jude Law giving an oddly, touching performance as a gigolo who helps him in his quest and some haunting music from John Williams. Osment is wonderful and pull your emotions with his credible, empathetic performance. But in the leading role, Osment is wonderful and pulls your emotions with his credible, empathetic performance.. its one to make you sob.

Sugarland Express
While there are so many blockbusters to choose from, my Steven Spielberg film starts at the beginning of it all: 1974’s “The Sugarland Express.”
After the success of the made-for-TV thriller “Duel”, Spielberg chose the true story of a young couple on the run as his theatrical debut. Goldie Hawn makes her dramatic debut as well, as a Mom desperate to keep her son from being put in a foster home.
She encourages her husband, William Atherton, to break out of jail and help her kidnap her son. Of course, nothing from that point on goes right.
It may seem an unusual choice for Spielberg, but the film has action and emotion in equal measure, and of course, a strong mother figure, who will protect her own against all adversity, a trait that pops up again and again in Spielberg films.
It’s interesting to see him early in his career begin to showcase his love of character – his pacing allows time for Hawn to really act and show true emotion.
