Opinion Battles Round 23

Favourite Guilty Pleasure

We all have that one film that people slam that we all love to watch for our own pleasure and that is what we are going to be looking at this time around.

If you want to take part in the next round we are going to look at European Subtitles film and you will need your entries sent to [email protected] by 27th November 2016.

Speed Racer

speed

I do love playing racing games, well I did when I was growing up as we get plenty of racing action that is way over the top and actually feels like a video game, I never saw the anime so anything the film did wrong in honouring the show I didn’t lose. The characters are clearly fictional and the race scenes are at times breath-taking set pieces with the final scene being one of my favorite in film.

Kim – Tranquil Dreams

Sharknado

Nothing says guilty pleasure like an Asylum B-movie that works.  What more could you ask for than a bad-ass guy that chops a flying shark or shots them as they fall from the sky.  There’s a not a lot of meaningless drama and yet it notches up the danger with shark tornadoes.  Its suspending your belief to the max possible but yet with a ton of cheesy one liners and possibly everything that makes it dumb and yet, the entertainment value is top-notch. Easily one of my favorite guilty pleasures

Hardware

Guilty pleasures” are hard to define. For me, if I like a movie, I feel no guilt about it. I know guilty pleasure movies tend to be ones you like that you know aren’t necessarily “good”. But what defines “good”?? I would imagine that everyone will have a completely different answer for this category so it will be an interesting round. A lot of people bitch that Titanic is bad but I like it. Is that a guilty pleasure? Or is it not bad ENOUGH? I adore a 1990 movie called Hardware (which I reviewed & then I got bitched at when some people watched it based on my positive review… It’s just my opinion! Lol).😉 Hardware seems closer to my own definition of a guilty pleasure whereas Titanic is liked by far too many people for anyone to actually feel guilty for admitting to liking it. But, again, I feel no guilt for having an opinion: I love Hardware. I also love Pump Up The Volume & Adventures In Babysitting! They’re far from Oscar-worthy but I watched those over & over & over as a teen and I still love them just as much to this day. I’m rambling now… I clearly need to just choose an answer! Okay, here’s how I’m going to do this: I’m choosing a favorite movie of mine that has the lowest IMDB score (I’ve looked up lots of my favorites). So, based on that… Yep, my favorite guilty pleasure is indeed Hardware! HA! But I feel no guilt.🙂

Freaky Friday

freaky

It’s hard to admit that I actually quite like a Lindsay Lohan film, but the remake of “Freaky Friday” is fun and the perfect film for switching off your brain for an hour or so and just enjoying.

Jamie Lee Curtis is wonderful acting like a teenager, there’s some cool music and the film also has a great supporting cast that includes Rosalind Chao and Stephen Tobolowski.

A definite guilty pleasure popcorn flick!

Office Space

office

My guilty pleasure would be the often overlooked Mike Judge classic ‘Office Space’ From beginning to end this is a laugh a minute observation of the absolute futility and meaninglessness of mundane office jobs. Mike Judge captures the mood perfectly and a fantastic supporting cast of  make this a movie I have watched many times

Richard – The Humpo Show

Sharknado

You shouldn’t like these films, but I somehow can’t get enough of them. The storylines are insane and outrageous. The acting abysmal. Everything about these films are just terrible, but I, among many keep watching these films.

The Beautician and the beast

beautican

My guilty pleasure movie is called The Beautician and the Beast. This was made in 1997 and stars Fran Drescher in the title role. Fran is an actress you either embrace or find extremely annoying and for whatever reason I love her. I loved her show, the Nanny and Beautician and the Beast is kind of a movie version of the show. It also plays off of classic films like The King and I, Beauty and the Beast, and Sound of Music very well. The story is about a woman from Queens who teaches cosmetology is mistaken for a great scholar and is sent to teach the children of an Eastern European despot. Fran then whips everyone into shape including the peasants ruled by the despot named Boris. Timothy Dalton is great in that role and he and Fran have good chemistry. The story is stupid and I know it isn’t a great movie but it makes me laugh and what can I say I just love me my Fran Drescher!

Emma – Emma Explains It All

Con-air

con-air

I almost didn’t choose Con Air. Not because I could think of anything better – obviously not (I’m not entirely sure there’s even a film in existence that beats the entertainment value of Con Air). No, it was actually because I wasn’t really sure whether it was a true guilty pleasure or not. I mean, I LOVE this film! Almost as much as Face Off – which isn’t a guilty pleasure before you ask, that film is almost Oscar worthy (for the science at least).

I thought about it for almost a day (seriously) and came to an honest conclusion that Con Air IS a guilty pleasure movie. It’s tons of fun and has a surprisingly good cast but at the end of the day, when I watch it, I certainly don’t take it seriously. It makes me laugh when it shouldn’t (Nicolas Cage mainly – the hair, the accent, the ‘attitude’) and I enjoy the whole ridiculous ride for what it is – a ridiculous ride.

Polar Express

polar

This is my ultimate guilty pleasure. Yes, I know the plot’s predictable, the character animation isn’t great and half the scenes go absolutely nowhere at all but it is so full of Christmas cheer and joy and the actors clearly loved doing it that you can’t help but enjoy this film. It may be a bumpy ride, but The Polar Express still keeps you nice and comfy.

Gosh, that was a bad one-liner.
