Forty-Seven artists on the Greater Ithaca Art Trail will have their studios open from 11 to 5 pm on October 6, 7, 13, and 14. It's an opportunity to see a wide variety of art, to find out how the artists make it, and to purchase paintings, prints, sculpture, or fine crafts for your home or office.
I am beginning to think about the preparations for my own studio. I will get out my list from last year and add new things I want to try out this year. One of them is to show the process of making my abstract paintings. I have images of many of my paintings at various stages from beginning to end. I plan to print out a series this year to show visitors.
One thing I've learned is that less is more. When my studio is too crowded with art, the choices become overwhelming. It's better to show fewer pieces, allowing enough space for visitors to feel comfortable and to see my paintings in their best environment.
I like the solitude of working alone in my studio most of the year, but on art trail weekends I try to become that friendly, outgoing person people will like to do business with.
