Earlier this year Open Mike Eagle released one of my favorite hip hop albums of 2014 titled Dark Comedy. Here, album opener and semi-title track “Dark Comedy Moring Show” (stream below) is reworked into a beat-heavier and more ‘nocturnal’ version titled “Dark Comedy Late Show” (stream above). There is something about the overall languid feel of the original that makes it marginally more appealing. Lyrically however, Open Mike Eagle largely outshine the former version by delivering assertive and clever lines about everything from the Ferguson shooting to “U2 albums all in your Itunes”.
