The cover story on our June furniture issue details the Los Feliz residence of actors Adam Jones and Jayma Mays. Now it's a sterling example of modern design, but prior to architect Mike Jacobs's deftly executed renovation, it was a crumbling mess. Glee Star Jayma Mays Los Angeles home renovation

Architect Mike Jacobs recast the Los Angeles house of actors Adam Jones and Jayma Mays.

The original house dated from the 1920s but had series of additions added to it in the 1940s, 1960s, and 1970s. Each section was tacked on to the last with little regard to what came before and some weren't properly permitted or up to code, which added to the complexities of renovation the structure.

Jacobs kept the exposed ceiling beams in the living room, but removed just about everything else. In place of the tile floor, he opted for polished concrete.

Jacobs gutted the interior and added roof decks to make up for the limited backyard space, creating a showpiece of casual southern California living. Hear the harrowing tale of how he did it in East Side Story: A Los Feliz Renovation on Friday, June 21, at 4:00 p.m. on the Design Innovation Stage. We'll chat about the process from start to finish and answer audience questions at the end.

Prior to the gut renovation, the house was dim and closed-off. Jacobs tore down walls to create a spacious feeling inside.
