For most of my life, England have been rubbish at cricket. Growing up, it was just one of those things that was true: Brazil are good at football; the sky is blue; England are rubbish at cricket. Throughout the 1990s and beyond, turning on the news to hear the words “England collapse again” was a depressingly reliable, and reliably depressing experience.
But in recent years things have changed, and the transformation of England from whipping boys to world-beaters was complete on Saturday with the crushing innings and 242 runs victory over India in the third Test at Edgbaston.
