This is based on the true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her struggle for equal rights and battling to be able to actually practice law after attending Harvard and Columbia. This film looks at the early cases of her historic career which really did manage to change everything!
A very worthy woman to have a film made about her as Ruth Bader Ginsburg really did change things within the legal system in the United States. Managing to get away from the stereotypes, parts of the film as a woman in 2019 to watch are really tough, the way the female lawyers were invited to a dinner with the professors at Harvard Law and very publicly embarrassed having to say why they want to be a lawyer having to put up with horrible comments and abuse. The thing is though a lot of working environments to this day which are male dominated still mean women have to put up with stupid comments on a daily basis.
Another good thing about the film was seeing that her husband Martin Ginsburg seemed to be so ahead of his time. Supporting his wife on her venture to law school, she was a year behind him. He became a very successful lawyer and that was something which made the couple very strong. Ruth could not get a job with a law firm none of them willing to take a chance on her, so she had to become a professor of law and was teaching the next generation about gender equality.
A huge part was based around Jane her daughter and how at 15 years old she was starting a different kind of movement. A very confident young woman who was not afraid to use her voice and stand up for herself. I found the scene with the builders to be a very impressive one and that was a highlight of the film in my opinion. When Ruth actually realised she was going to be doing something very good for the next generation, her daughter's generation who were already stronger than her generation.
Performance wise I felt Felicity Jones was strong enough in the leading role and very impressive from start to finish. I really enjoyed how she grew into the role as the film went on. Having great chemistry with Armie Hammer. Kathy Bates in a very small role which I guess could even have been called a cameo for the amount of time she was in it, however a very powerful moment and very scene stealing. Although would we really expect anything less from Bates?
I had heard the film was very average, well I personally thought it was better than just being average. With some impressive performances and a very important story at its core. Highlighting that we are still fighting for equal rights in some working fields. Will we ever fully have it? I guess at times it does not feel like that when we find out that men are still paid more than women in different places. But I feel this film is highlighting these issues and showing how far we have come, and that we must keep pushing forward.
