The business of the original designer (KKAA) and the NFT platform OpenSea have started a new metaverse project that could give Tokyo’s popular Nakagin Capsule Tower a second digital life.
A few months after the tower’s official demolition began in April, the LAETOLI Corporation is now auctioning off the rights to rebuild its founder’s most famous Metabolic work in both the real and digital worlds. This is being done in partnership with its KABUKI-X venture. With the help of CAD files from BDP and a Revit model of the tower, potential buyers could build an exact copy of the tower anywhere in the world.
The people who own “real space” rights are only limited by the same rules that apply to everyone else in the country. This clears the way for the rights to the building to be sold or rented, which BDP says could lead to a large number of new buildings with different sizes, purposes, and total pod counts. (The 140 copies that are still up for auction are also being bought by other universities.)
Yoshitaka Kataoka, who is in charge of LAETOLI, said in a statement, “We would like to create a society in which cultural values are respected and what people want to see is preserved. By using new technologies such as blockchain and NFT, we believe we have created the possibility of protecting our heritage for future generations.”
To get the rights to both versions, you have to make an offer of 1 ETH, which is about $1,844 USD. The auction will end at 12:15 a.m. EDT on October 20. Kataoka says, “we hope that this auction will ensure that this historical masterpiece will be rebuilt somewhere in the world by those who value the idea of Metabolism and are able to optimise his design to enhance society.”
