On Deification – 11

By Mba @mbartoloabela

“Those who have been purified … make themselves worthy to contemplate invisible things, the essence of God remaining beyond their attainment; but those who are worthy of this contemplation can be initiated into it and make it the object of their understanding; thus they participate in the intelligible gift of the light of God in their impassible and immaterial intelligence, but they also know that the divine surpasses these contemplations and initiations, and thus they possess this superintelligible and superadded [grace] in a way that exceeds us; they possess it not because they do not see, in the manner of those who practice negative theology, but in their very vision they know what surpasses vision, in suffering negation and not in conceptualising it” (Gregory Palamas, II.3.26).
