Bristlecone may be 2,000 years old
The bristlecone pine is the oldest tree in North America. The ancient root system is a work of art by Mother Nature with a fascinating pattern of twists and turns, stones and ashes caught among the roots and a variety of patterns in the wood.
The tree went through a fire but the roots were about two feet into the ground, so removing it was no easy task. After Smith got it out of the ground and home, he cut the back off with a one-man timber saw so the piece can hang flat against a wall. "I just never got around to hanging it myself," he said.
