October Drift’s third album ‘Blame the Young’ finds the four-piece delivering their most powerful and personal songs yet…
The title track opens the album with a blast of vocals, power drumming, alt-rock riffs and words about the state of the nation, referencing how many people are in ‘denial’: ‘It’s just the aching inside, blame divide’. ‘Demons’ follows with an Editors-esque sound as Kiran Roy talks about broken hearts and asks someone to ‘Sink your claws into my eyes, pierce the skin’. On first listen, ‘Nothing Makes Me Feel…’ is a love song but when you listen closely to the words, it appears to be more about toxicity…
‘Don’t Care’ has a more jangle pop-meets-New Jersey sound, while ‘Everybody Breaks is an emotive piece with a self-critical tone: ‘I should have known better’. Recent single ‘Tyrannosaurus Wreck ‘ finds Kiran looking back on a past relationship and his dramatic response to his own actions – ‘This is not where I saw us next’ – while ‘Heal’ has talk of ‘making the darkness disappear’ delivered against a Gang Of Youths-style soundtrack: ‘Life can wear you down, don’t let it reach the bone… there’s no place like alone’.
The record finishes with the suitably anthemic ‘Not Running Anymore’, a song which finds Kiran screaming ‘You’re my favorite mess’ over a crescendo of riffs and strings. ‘Blame the Young’ is a rocket of a record that won’t get old.
