So many awesome disability-related reads, so little time, right? To help you out, here’s October’s round-up. And guess what?! This is my second October round-up, because I started doing these last October. Time flies! (Click here to check out my first ever Disability News and Blog Post Round-up.) With this time of year being so busy, I hope it saves a little time for anyone looking to stay updated without searching all around the web. As always, I highly suggest pinning or bookmarking the round-up so you can come back to it whenever you have a few spare moments. Let me know what interested you the most, and if you think I missed anything. And most importantly, have a happy November!

Disability Blog Posts

  • Cerebral Palsy Is Not the Most Interesting Thing About Me – This post resonated deeply with me, because I spend so much time writing about disability-related issues that I sometimes have to remind myself of the other things that define who I am.
  • Unlocking the Invisible Elevator: Accessibility at Tech Conferences – Accessibility is a huge issue when it comes to big events such as conferences. This piece is full of important things to consider in ensuring access.
  • Down syndrome isn’t just cute – Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! I’m so thrilled about this article, because it’s so true that far too many people sugarcoat disability.
  • This Woman Is Strong, Sexy, And Brave—Even If She Does Have Both Legs – I could not stop laughing at this short satirical article. It’s spot on!
  • Lesser-known things about being a wheelchair user – I’d like to echo every sentiment in this piece. Especially the one about keeping wheelchair jokes to yourself. They’re just not original or funny.
  • How the Pro-Choice Movement Excludes People With Disabilities – In a topic I’ve rarely seen discussed, this article covers the contradiction between being pro-choice and pro-disability rights. This is a tough but crucial topic to consider.
  • The big picture – I have so much respect for the author of this piece for making sure that her son’s disability wasn’t hidden.
  • Musings on the Value of “Awareness” – I’ve never been a fan of the concept of “awareness” campaigns, because we need to focus on acceptance rather than awareness. This piece highlights perfectly why we must go beyond the basic concept of “awareness.”
