Octavia Spencer and Queen Latifah have teamed up to executive produce The Rhinelander Affair for the big screen.
Inspired by the book of the same name, the story is about the marriage of Leonard and Alice Rhinelander. He was white, and she was one-fourth black. They married in secret, and once Leonard family found it, they forced an annulment trial. They tried to say Alice tricked Leonard into marrying him. Alice admitted in court that she told Leonard of her heritage. Alice was ordered to take off her clothes so the jury could determine if she was to be considered “colored.” They ruled in Alice’s favor, and the annulment was denied. Leonard’s estate was ordered to pay a yearly allowance to Alice for the rest of her life. The two never reunited, according to PBS.
