Obligatory Oscar Commentary

Posted on the 29 February 2016 by Christopher Saunders
Obligatory Oscar commentaryThe Oscars were last night. I didn't watch the telecast, so no deep thoughts on Chris Rock's performance or the inevitable interminable musical numbers. I generally hate the Oscar ceremony so just as well I skipped it.
Spotlight won Best Picture, one of only two Oscars it picked up (along with Original Screenplay). Of the five Best Picture nominees I've seen (that, The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, The Revenant and Room) it's definitely the best, so I'm happy with that decision. I would have liked Rachel McAdams for Best Supporting Actress, but she never had more than an outside chance.
The Revenant won Best Actor, so Leo DiCaprio's fanbase can stop whining and making memes; then again, he had weak competition. It also earned more deserving nods for Best Director and Cinematography. I was alternately intrigued and frustrated by this film, so it's no loss that it didn't win the big prize. Still, it looked very nice.
Mad Max: Fury Road surprised most people by winning six Oscars, albeit mostly technical awards (Best Editing was a surprise). Brie Larson won a very deserving Best Actress for Room, which I hope to review soon. Glad to see Inside Out win Best Animated Feature; as I've commented before, that film has a special place in my heart so I'm really happy about its recognition.
My main joy, however, is seeing Ennio Morricone win Best Original Score. A shame it's for The Hateful Eight, but as someone who's loved his work since childhood, listening to his soundtracks for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West until the CDs wore down to nothing, such recognition is still an incredible treat.
Full list of winners here. Stay tuned for more reviews.
