Much delayed post, but I think this might be cos I saved the best for last. One of my favorite cities in NZ is Oamaru. Sadly, I didn't even stay for a day even though it was definitely worth a day stay at least. It was a town with one of the most character. I love it so much.
I wish there were more travellers who actually wrote posts about it. If I had read more about this town, I would have more aptly allocated more time for this place. One of the reason I stopped by was for the Steampunk HQ. I grew very interested in steampunk ever since I saw a house renovation on this theme on TV. Haha.
Personally, I love how interactive the exhibitions are. I could run around and touch most of the exhibits. Just a word for the faint-hearted, the place is a little on the dark side and sometimes may be scary. I think I freaked out a little. But still, I had a really good time. No regrets in driving all the way for it.
I am no Steampunk expert. But the vibes of Steampunk takes a bit of the Victorian Style, putting quite a bit of industrial elements to it. So, generally, you will quite a number of gadgets parts, metal tubes and goggles. :D I did my best to dress in my steampunk look...but Hubs felt I was more of a punk than a steampunk Lol.
While we were in the area, we also explored its harbor which has quite a bit of steampunk elements. The shops at Oamaru were the most fascinating for me. Although I did not buy anything (cos I need time when I shop T_T), it was checking out what the shops had to offer.
You can also observe the penguins at Oamaru. I was really upset we had to continue with our drive. So we missed catching the penguins cos there will only come back to shore in the evening. I only managed to catch some seals tanning itself. But I guess this means I will have to come back again in the future. I had really enjoyed what NZ had to offer. Would really recommend all of you to go down under :D
