Space Milestone: International Space Station Inhabited
- On Oct 31, 2000, a Soyuz shuttle left with the first crew to live in the International Space Station, consisting of American commander Bill Shepherd and two Russian cosmonauts, Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko. The flight left from the same site in central Asia where Sputnik was launched in 1957, beginning the Space Age.
First Scheduled Radio Broadcast
- Station KDKA at Pittsburgh, PA, broadcast the results of the presidential election. The station got its license to broadcast Nov 7, 1921. By 1922 there were about 400 licensed radio stations in the US.
Plan Your Epitaph Day
- Dedicated to the proposition a forgettable gravestone is a fate worse than death and everyone can be in the same league with William Shakespeare and W.C. Fields.
Traffic Directors Day
- A day honoring radio and TV traffic departments, which schedule programs and announcements on the nation's broadcast stations.
National Deviled Egg Day
- The purpose of this day is to make and eat Deviled Eggs. You can use your favorite recipe, or (hopefully) find a restaurant serving them in recognition of this day.
All Souls' Day
- Commemorates the faithful departed. The Roman Catholic celebration is based on the doctrine the souls of the faithful which at death have not been cleansed from venial sins, or have not fully atoned for mortal sins, cannot attain the beatific vision in heaven yet, and they may be helped to do so by prayer and by the sacrifice of the Mass.
Look for Circles Day
- honoring all the circles in the world by looking for as many circles as you can find on this day. Make a game of it and have fun. Let us know if you find any crop circles!
