We are very fortunate that Californian SuzyThompson will be joining Jim Kweskin at his “extravaganza” at the Regent Theater in Arlington on February 4 (the show is sold out) and to present workshops at the Berklee School of Music, as she has selected it as one of two presenters for side concerts, notloB on February 7, and a house concert in Roslindale the next day. Suzy Thompson is a “musician’s musician” who plays fiddle and guitar alongside artists like Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur, Del Rey, Ann Savoy, etc.https://www.ericandsuzy.com/suzy-bio.html
This rare solo concert will include blues, Cajun and Old Time material. Suzy will also perform material from two albums that she’s currently working on. One is a blues album and the other is an album of songs by the great 70s singer-songwriter Paul Siebel (“Louise” is his most famous song.)
Suzy usually performs with her husband, guitarist Eric Thompson. They live in Berkeley CA where Suzy directs the Berkeley Old Time Music Convention (now in its 20th year).
Suzy’s long musical journey dates from touring with British singer Frankie Armstrong when she was still in her teens. In her 20s, she was a founding member of Any Old Time String Band (their Arhoolie album is still in print) and Blue Flame String Band (highly regarded recording on Flying Fish). She has performed and recorded with banjo players Mac Benford (Backwoods Band) and Bill Evans (Bluegrass Intentions) and Cajun accordion legend Danny Poullard (California Cajun Orchestra, 2 award winning albums). The past 10 years or so have included a landmark blues album with the Texas Sheiks (Geoff Muldaur, Jim Kweskin, Cindy Cashdollar et al), duets with resonator ukulele and guitar goddess Del Rey, and a recent collaboration with Cajun superstar Ann Savoy. Suzy also has recorded with Kathy Kallick and Laurie Lewis, Maria Muldaur, Country Joe McDonald, Darol Anger, Jody Stecher & Kate Brislin, Mary Flower, Alan Senauke, etc.

Luke Bulla has been singing and playing music most of his life, touring with and singing in his family band from age four, Luke took up the fiddle at seven. Over the course of the next few years, he won the National Fiddle Contest (in Weiser, Idaho) six times in his respective age categories. His seventh win came in the Grand Champion division at age sixteen, making him the youngest to have earned the title at the time. In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville to establish himself as a full time musician. He spent his early years in Tennessee playing fiddle in Ricky Skaggs’ band, Kentucky Thunder, which earned him his first Grammy Award. Luke was a member of the John Cowan Band. Luke has also performed and/or recorded with Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Russ Barenberg Trio, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs, to name a few. In 2009, Luke released a solo EP featuring Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Aoife O’Donovan and more. Since 2009, Luke has been touring with Lyle Lovett. Luke released an LP, Who Loves You Better, produced by Bryan Sutton in May 2016. Irish music from Portland and Boston
Fódhla brings both high energy and stellar artistry to the traditional music stage.
The trio’s sound is firmly rooted in the traditional Irish melodies and ornamentation that fiddler Ellery Klein and flute player Nicole Rabata honed during years spent abroad in Ireland’s cities Cork, Limerick, and Ennis. Fiddle and flute tunes are superbly supported by guitarist Bethany Waickman, whose inventive, tasteful chords unfold with driving rhythm perfected from years of playing for contradances.
Cognizant of their North American roots, Fódhla aims to appeal to a broad audience by bringing variety, inventive harmonies and unique arrangements to traditional music. A typical concert starts off with high-energy traditional sets of Irish reels and jigs. Fiddle and flute then trade melody and harmonies on a Québécois waltz paired with an elegant French bourrée. Becoming a “thing”, Don’s third time with notloB will be a charm. We are announcing this early because the first two concerts were fully subscribed.
Don White is equal parts storyteller-comedian-author-troubadour-folk singer-songwriter, and has been bringing audiences to laughter and tears for 30 years. White’s arc as an award-winning songwriter and performer has taken him from his industrial hometown of Lynn, MA across the country as hitchhiker, through Boston’s comedy clubs and coffeehouses, and onto the stage with greats like Arlo Guthrie, Taj Mahal, Ritchie Havens, Patty Larkin, Bill Morrissey, Tom Rush, Louden Wainright III, and Christine Lavin, with whom he toured for 8 years all across North America in a co-bill called The Funny Side of the Street. At every point, White has been the ultimate observer, infusing his work with his experiences as a husband, a father, a seeker, and a joker.
As a storyteller, White has been featured at festivals around the country including the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival in Utah and Cave Run Storytelling Festival in Kentucky. Since 2015, he has joined master storytellers Bil Lepp and Bill Harley in Father’s Daze, a hilarious three-man storytelling show about the triumphs and tribulations of fatherhood. White is hilariously funny, but his humor always comes from his big heart.
White has released ten CDs, three live DVDs, and an two books: Memoirs of a C Studentand the just released The Hitchhiking Years and 4 Other Stories.His latest album is Live at the Guthrie Center, available now. In 2011, he won the Jerry Christen Memorial Award, given out by Boston Area Coffeehouse Association, for his work with the community and that same year was given a key to the city in his hometown of Lynn, Massachusetts.
