Space Dandy Season 2 Episode 6

Modesty, baby!

Last time on Space Dandy Season 2, Dandy fished for a giant legendary fish known as a Munagi.

Summary of Space Dandy Season 2 Episode 6

  • In the search for an elusive alien known as a Cloudian, Dandy and the crew find themselves in dire need for food. They’re beamed to a planet that has a free buffet, and there they run into Scarlet, the woman who works at the Alien Registration Center. A mysterious man named Gentle swoops in and takes Scarlet to his ship, and he’s revealed to be the Cloudian that Dandy was chasing. All the while, Honey had been kidnapped by Dr. Gel so that she could lead them to Dandy, and she’s then revealed to be half-Cloudian. As Dr. Gel eventually finds Dandy on board Gentle’s spaceship, he proceeds to destroy the spaceship in order to capture Dandy, but fails. Gentle’s cloud is severely damaged from the attack. However, he meets Honey after she escaped from Dr. Gel’s ship, and she’s revealed to be his half-sister, Lady.

My Take

  • In a strange way, this episode serves somewhat as a story about Honey. So let me get this straight: Honey, a minor character who is a waitress at Boobies, gets more character development than Dr. Gel, who would (under normal circumstances) be a much more important character in a series like this? That’s not a real criticism because I’ve given up all hope for anything about Dr. Gel to be explained, but it makes me wonder. Now I want to see an entire episode about Dr. Gel. I harp on this a lot, but that’s because I just want to know more about him.

Maybe there’ll be an episode one day where Dandy does have to dress up like a woman. Foreshadowing…?

  • Anyway, this was a fun episode. The premise is that Dandy and the crew are looking for an alien called a Cloudian, which turns out to be an alien who has control over a massive cloud that reacts to their emotions. Then, it turns out that Honey is half-Cloudian after she gets kidnapped by Dr. Gel. Out of all the characters they could have expanded our knowledge of, I wonder why it was Honey? Come to think of it, Dandy himself hasn’t really had any character arc or backstory. I’d like to see that eventually happen.
  • Before now, nothing much was known about Scarlet. After this episode, still not much is known about her, but it was nice to let her finally get a chance to be in the spotlight. Even though her only contribution to the episode was getting drunk, it was still nice to see her interact with our heroes. Dandy even had some great lines about her, saying that he couldn’t love her because she never smiles (plus she apparently has wrinkles). It kind of sucked seeing her become the butt of Dandy’s jokes, but at least she was there.

I’m disturbed by the fact that all the women have the same face…

  • Surprisingly, this episode wasn’t very crazy. In fact, by Space Dandy terms, it was relatively tame. The only part that became more action oriented was when Dr. Gel decided to attack Gentle, and they had a highly one-sided battle, which was fun. Again, Dr. Gel died, but it was funny here because of how everyone just brushed off as if they knew it’s a common occurrence. How many times must that man die before we know why he does what he does!?
  • My favorite part of the episode is how Gentle was set up to be a possible villain, but he turned out to be a true gentleman in the end. I easily could have suspected that he’d abduct Scarlet like he alluded to when the two were talking, and I was just waiting for him and Dandy to go at it. Even when it’s revealed that his intentions were genuine, Dandy still wanted to go after him because he’s a rare alien. The idea of “saving Scarlet” never came up, and that was kind of funny.
  • As with the random humor of the show, there was a random laugh track put in the show, which in itself is hilarious. The most absurd part about it is how they actually explained why there was a laugh track! The laughter was generated by unseen creatures called “ambiancians”. Random, abstract stuff that tries to rationalize absurdities in conventional humor or media is hilarious to me, so I loved that explanation.

Space Dandy is filmed in front of a live studio audience, baby!

  • “The Gallant Space Gentleman, Baby” is another good episode. It let some of the enigmatic supporting characters get a line or two of character development in. Maybe future episodes will expand upon these ideas. However I doubt they will. It doesn’t really matter, though, because this episode was good enough as it is.
