But first, Dandy will have to transfer to a school of fish, then he will become king of said school…
Last time on Space Dandy Season 2, Dandy became the king of a high school where song and dance reigned supreme.
Summary of Space Dandy Season 2 Episode 5
- Dandy, QT, and Meow are all on a fishing trip in search for a rare alien when Meow mentions a legendary fish known as a Munagi. After landing on the planet that the Munagi is supposedly located, Dandy realizes that the planet is made up of mud and water. He then meets a girl who takes him to an old man named L’delise, who is cold with Dandy. Dandy and then girl then search for the Munagi, but have no luck. L’delise then reveals to Dandy that he is one of the only people on the planet who actually believes in Munagi, and many people have died in search for the fish. L’delise then goes missing, and Dandy and the girl find him searching for Munagi, and they help. Munagi then reveals itself, and escapes to a revolving comet which is revealed to be its home world.
My Take
- Two weeks ago, Dandy tried to help save an alien fish on a foreign planet that was being circled by his home world. This week, Dandy needs to fish for a rare sea creature whose home is a comet that circles the planet it’s currently on. Pretty coincidental, huh? I only wonder how many more fishing-related episodes there will be in this series. If they’re done as well as these two, though, I wouldn’t mind if we saw a couple more.
Pompadours really need to be taken more seriously
- It doesn’t matter if the subject is kind of recycled because this was another really great episode. Instead of accidentally getting transported to a mysterious planet, Dandy voluntarily goes to this planet and is shocked to realize that the entire planet is essentially made up of mud. He then meets a little girl and bonds with her, but not in the same way he did in episode 5 of the first season. Here, they don’t have as good of a bond, but the girl does have some nice moments with Dandy.
- Something I love about this episode was how the music was very atmospheric. It helped amplify the hopelessness of the situation that Dandy was going through because of the minimalistic approach to the music of the episode. That combined with frames of a desolated, mud-filled world really gave this episode a much different feel than previous, sci-fi oriented episodes had.
- The one aspect of the episode I didn’t like as much was how Meow and QT got pushed to the side. It seems that that’s happening a lot lately. That’s not the worst thing that can happen to the series, but it does make it feel a bit more empty. When Dandy and the crew get separated in this episode, the plot doesn’t really diverge off into two different paths with one following Dandy and one following QT and Meow. Instead, Meow and QT get pushed off to the side until the last five minutes of the episode. That kind of sucked, but at least it didn’t just the substance of the episode.
- Even though there were some drawbacks, this was still a very enjoyable addition. The best part of the episode came when Dandy finally found the alien he was looking for, only to be completely overwhelmed by it. The scene that followed where all the villagers came to help Dandy and his newfound friends was just so amazing.
Series over. It had a good run, but it appears that…
… Oh, never mind
- “The Big Fish is Huge, Baby” is another great episode. Unlike the first season of Space Dandy, this one seems to be much more consistent in its high quality content, so much so that it’s becoming hard to say new things about Space Dandy every week. Yeah, I liked this episode a lot, and it’s no surprise that I’m liking this season a lot. What else is there to say?
