Notes of Koufuku Graffiti Episode 9

  • No Christmas episode?! I am disappoint!! Oh well. In that case I smell a Valentine’s Day episode coming; Ryo making melted chocolate and Kirin making it badly…so instead she’s just the taster. Like……ummm……every single episode, it seems. Her mom can’t really cook so maybe it’s something that runs in the family…
  • Okay so last week was a serious downer, so was this week a repeat of that? Well I can’t really say. As I said last week, each episode had a consistent theme to it. This week it’s the new year: something we all know that is a huge thing in Japan, especially when it comes to food (warm food at that). But somehow this episode seemed to fall flat. Sure we watched Ryo desperate to taste oden, and Kirin giving her girl the hug of the year, but it just felt like I wanted more. Have I really been feeling like this in every episode recently? Like there’s way too much focus on Ryo and Kirin, and not enough on everyone else? Perhaps that was the intent the whole time. I’m just…disappointed, that’s all.
  • I wanted to see how Shiina’s family rung in the new year (and how ‘dangerous’ it got over at the estate). I wanted to see Kirin’s psychotic uncle. I wanted to see more of Akira too. But the one thing that does bother me a lot is this woman…

Stop all that moaning from upstairs!!

  • The neighbor downstairs. It was more the likely intentional that she have no speaking role in the show; like Ume in Hidamari Sketch, she’d just be there, as some sort of ‘mascot’ to the show. I would think that she’d have much to say/worry/get annoyed about Ryo’s and Kirin’s activities upstairs every weekend. Ideally, I’d like the last episode to have her banging on Ryo’s door, telling her to keep quiet, but then Ryo would smile in her airhead way, offer her something to eat, which would make the neighbor go wild with too.
  • So sure, I am clutching at straws. Is it because I’m not particularly happy at watching the same kind of thing again and again? I usually lambaste every episode that has the atypical theme, may it be Christmas, New Year, Valentine’s Day, summer/beach/water park, but the near lack of episodes with these themes is making me frustrated a little. I wanted a Christmas episode but at the same time I didn’t…but when I didn’t get one, I got disappointed, and instead we cut straight into the new year episode. That makes me sound like a total and complete hypocrite. Yup, it does.

I do nothing for the New Year, so if I saw this, I’d go nuts too.

  • Well we have 3 more episodes left to go. The food porn has been coming thick and fast, and that was something we were all promised (and we got it), but there are definitely holes in this show that I just cannot understand or talk about. The idea of turning the show into a Martha Stewart anime is rather novel, so maybe it’s the fact that, while the characters themselves are very likable, halfway through the show the plot has just seemed to fizzle out and go plain. I want something to happen that’ll actually make me sit up and make me excited again.
  • That’s right. I said it. I thought I was going to love the ongoing food porn, but the complete lack of plot and the indescribable holes have seemed to make the porn pale somewhat.
