- And what’s on this week? Saury. I’ve never been a fan of fish. And normally we’d see Ryo discussing, to us viewers and her fellow onlooking husband, how to do saury decently. But even though the roles were reversed (since Shiina-san was so annoyed at Kirin at how she sits around and does nothing), this episode is still nothing more than filler. And I have to tell you something…in a show that I’m seriously enjoying so far this winter, I’m actually starting to worry a little. Kirin and Shiina-san certainly mean well, and Ryo looked all moe wanting to help them, and Tsuyuko looked like the harsh but kind maid, and Shiina-san’s mom looked…no different, I don’t think anything will change in the remaining 5 episodes.
Yup yup.
- What I’m getting at is I don’t know whether I can handle 5 more of the same thing. I can understand that while the food is the key thing in this show, and the girls are secondary, I still believe that Koufuku Graffiti could have more than just lashes and lashes of meat and fish and noodles and everything else that’s edible. I mean, we barely know that much about Ryo’s parents, or Kirin’s parents for that matter. But maybe I could flip it; should we care? The viewers can only watch Koufuku Graffiti for the masses of food porn. Admit it. Of course we do. Okay, so maybe I’m just being over-analytical and cynical. I am enjoying the show still, and I guess just watching this at face value is a little better, instead of nit-picking at the tiny little details.
- And yes, Kirin has done literally nothing apart from gorging on food; the food Ryo makes her. Although her efforts of making saury for Ryo turned out not to be that great, that wasn’t the point. The point was “Here. I tried. It turned out not to be great, but I tried.” Almost like some kid attempting to make cookies for her mother, it was the fact that she poured her heart and soul into making it. Oh yeah, and now I’ve finally figured out where Kirin’s appetite comes from. I gather it’s partly down to the fact that her mom is such a poor cook, but I suspect that the remaining 99% is down to her bag, shaped like a joint of meat.
Even my bag is edible!
- This episode also gives us that impression that food does taste better when you’re enjoying it with the people you like, hence the reason why Kirin and Shiina-san was so up for making the saury for their beloved cook. Being the anti-social person I am, I’m not entirely sure I agree with the whole ‘tasting better’ idea. I’m certainly not the healthiest eater, what with frequenting fast-food joints when I see fit. And since the nearest one to be is always full of college students, I’m forced to bring my mp3 player with me. Also, I wouldn’t be eating my chicken nuggets and fries in any erotic sense either. I really ought to eat more healthy stuff. Ryo can help me out on that one, I hope.
- And she’ll teach me that going to McDonalds is a waste of money.
