GTO 2014 Episode 5

Needless to say, I didn’t expect to see this type of ship to sail after the events of Ep 5. Unless Usami dreams of becoming a host

Last week’s GTO had Tsugumi getting bullied, Onizuka solving it, while on the side Miyaji’s shooting at pictures with her classmates on it with an air gun and continuing to be the weirdest classmate ever and Ayuna FINALLY tells Kuzuki that’s she pregnant…and 4 months along.

Summary of Great Teacher Onizuka 2014 Episode 6

  • After Ayuna tells Kuzuki that she’s pregnant, neither of them can decide together on what to do with their situation, and slowly seem to grow distant from each other. Meanwhile, the main story in Episode 6 revolves around Sana Hiiragi (Natsumi Okamoto) and her talent with the guitar. That talent leads her to upload a video online, it gets a bunch of views…and her classmates/Onizuka find out due to her being careless. But thanks to them, she’s encouraged to take part in an audition that could make her a pro and followed by many. However, her mom is completely against it, even going so far as to destroy the guitar that belonged to her father who passed away, and ripped up the mail that told her she passed the second audition. Sana leaves her home, is eventually brought back to her home, and finds out that her mom has left Sana and Sana’s siblings out of nowhere. On the day of the audition, Onizuka takes Sana over to the hospital and explains what her mom had been doing since she left. Once she picks up the guitar that her mom got repaired, she heads over to the audition, but ends up failing, and after a conversation with Onizuka about dreams, she continues to aspire to be great with the guitar.
  • Just one random note before I continue…

  • Hey, I don’t know about you, but doesn’t this look familiar…?

Great Teacher Onizuka 2014 Episode 6

  • Oh hey look, it’s the police office in GTO 2012 Episode 2! Holy crap they’ve been replaced by a music agency! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
  • But on a more fun note, I thought it was cool that we got to see an old GTO 2012 location, even if it’s not relevant to the plot. Again, will continue to note any old things from GTO 2012 that I happen to notice. If there’s any more though! This does make you wonder, even though it’s now Summer Vacation, if they’re in Shonan anymore….(or if they were ever in Shonan in the first place!
  • Now, let’s get down to the episode in question.

Sana learns to guitar, even though she’s guitared before

Sana learns how to voice project, though I’m sure she’s had to do that before

Sana learns how to run, even though I’m DEFINITELY sure she’s had to run before!

Great Teacher Onizuka 2014 Episode 6

Sana learns how to use a gun, because…actually I’m still not sure why she had to use a gun, what’s going on here?!?

  • I actually liked this episode a lot. Aside from Episode 2, definitely the best episode of the season so far. Had the good amount of drama, a clear side to take, and it also explores dreams and goals from a different angle: the failure part.
  • Sana’s dad was pretty important to her, and she made sure she stayed connected to him by playing his guitar. The problem that comes about is she can only understand it from that perspective. She doesn’t understand it from her mom’s (Kumiko) perspective: her husband had a dream, continued to fail, then drank his way towards his death. Considering that type of experience took place, and how they’re living tough now (one parent, 4 children…that seems like a lot), it is understandable to be concerned about her daughter attempting to be a singer and failing in the exact same way. Not nearly the same, but, for reasons I won’t go into too much detail with, my mom had an incident a long time ago with my older brother due to a mistake he made, and she’s been pretty protective of me and my sister since, even though we’re as old as a hill now and know right from wrong. A parent has a lot to worry about their child, and they do want to wish them the best.
  • I just don’t think Kumiko went about it in the right way. Of course as someone without a child of course I’d stick up for Sana in this instance, but for about 2/3 of the time she appeared she seemed cold and completely resistant to doing a lot of things, from when she shut down Sana from teaching her siblings how to swim to not just getting rid of the guitar, but decimating it, and ripping up her mail that told her she passed the second audition, that felt like she was going too far. The only time she ever appeared contrite (and looked it) was when she spoke with Onizuka and at the end when Sana was shooting a new video. Yeah Kumiko seemed like she took Sana seriously after she said dad’s guitar was the only way she felt connected with him, but I thought it was hard to buy at that point.
  • Really, what might have helped Kumiko’s case was if we got a flashback of exactly who her husband was. All we know is that he drank after failing to become a musician, and he died. Obviously the flashback shouldn’t be long, but examples of how he acted with Sana and then how he acted with Kumiko, especially if negatively, would have at least made me feel a bit of sadness for Kumiko. Most likely.
  • Anyways, the dream angle has been covered well enough in GTO (from Tomoko in GTO 2012 to the entire graduation special), so seeing it again is kind of tough, but at least it covered it from the failure angle — as in, Sana failed. Her audition through this way to become a pro failed. So…that means finding another way. Which Onizuka is basically saying when he mentions there are infinite paths. Of course there aren’t really infinite paths, but there’s obviously more than one way to become a pro. Or at least show people you’re good. Like those videos she keeps shooting. Sana, if you’re breaking 50,000 views on a video (while you’re wearing your SCHOOL uniform and leaving your ABACUS for people to see it), that’s probably a good thing. I’m just saying. Just be smarter on what you wear though so your classmates don’t know if you want to keep it a secret.
  • It is probably worth noting that Serizawa, the guy who apparently has NBA potential, is gonna have to deal with finding another dream to pursue thanks to that shoulder injury that he’s certain is not as bad as he thinks it is.

YOU ARE PASSING

  • Annnnnnnnddddd we finally will get to the big issue next episode: Ayuna vs Kuzuki!…Well, it’s not an actual fight but there’s so many questions that should finally be answered in this episode. Why is Ayuna immediately deciding what to do with the child without even hearing what Kuzuki wants to do? Why didn’t Ayuna tell him earlier? Based on how she’s acting, she’s kind of implying Kuzuki…may not be the father?!? It’s pretty big that someone that she likes and with something as serious as pregnancy, she’s not disclosing anything. There’s obviously something up. And apparently Miyaji knows something! WHY ELSE IS SHE STALKING HER?!? Needless to say, we got some trouble…and finally Onizuka will know about it!
  • …And also learn more about Fujikawa? Because boy, she’s been getting out of the picture in most of Onizuka’s exploits…and it apparently is gonna boil over in Episode 7? Well then, I guess I better prepare for teacher vs teacher drama…
