Notes of Great Teacher Onizuka 2014 Episode 5

This is now officially getting out of hand

In last week’s GTO, Onizuka solved the issue between Kiritani, his dad, and the basketball team, for better or worse. (For better!)

Summary of Great Teacher Onizuka 2014 Episode 5

  • Apparently someone’s not pleased with the turn of events in Class 2-A, as there’s a row of pictures of the students lined up somewhere in the school, and they’re getting shot at with an air gun. One of the pictures is seen by Kanako (Sairi Itoh) and Tomomi (Mio Miyatake), and they assume that Kei (Akashi Takei), the owner of the gun, is the culprit. Tsugumi (Fuka Koshiba) however steps in, and eventually this leads to outing this issue to the teachers, who force Kanako and Tonomi to apologize to Kei. This does not make them happy, so they get their vengeance by starting their own school play for the festival, getting Tsugumi to play Cinderella, and then practically abuse her whenever the chance arrives. In the practice rehearsal, her best friend Nozomi (Mizuki), who was told to let whatever happens to Tsugumi happen by Kanako and Tonomi, was going to hit her with a broom before Onizuka steps in, turns the bullying on the other side, and everyone learns a lesson on how dangerous bullying is.

Sure is a family friendly TV show now!

  • I think the first question I had was after what happened to Mariko in the very first episode, I was sure those girls learned their lesson on picking on people. Well…maybe they needed to take some more lessons after all.
  • That said, I’m gonna have to take apart Fujikawa. While I didn’t believe she was all the way there in terms of the GTO way or trusting students more, she seemed like she would be able to deal with anything that could happen on her watch. Well, I was wrong: she still needs some learning! Instead of dealing with the situation where the students were in the room and talking to Checkers (hey, that’s the name Kanako gave him, I’ll stick with that!) and about to explain everything, she cut them off and told them to apologize. That sure was a good decision wasn’t it? This could have been easily explained and understood, but she didn’t want to take the time to deal with it any longer. That’s not good.
  • That ultimately led to some pissed off girls plotting revenge, and somehow manipulating the class’s student festival meeting (I still don’t know how), and then they had the lead in making the scripts. Yeahhhhh, that seemed hokey and dumb. I mean, they didn’t even have a script for the actors, much less the whole class (and not everyone was there). That was pretty weird. I doubt that can actually happen in a school.

  • There was one comment made by the Director that stood out for me in this episode (cause you know, I think the bullying aspect I’ve seen enough times and might just see more later in this series): “pain is a part of education.”. That’s pretty true! Of course, there are different types of pain. Pain obviously in just going to school, dealing with mediocre teachers, and having to do homework is some sort of pain. But then there’s obviously the pain of having relationships and they go sour, having to deal with being the odd one out in class, and trying to go to school in such a toxic environment. The way the human body is wired, escaping pain is unavoidable. But while it’s a part of education, that’s all it is — a part. Having as much fun as you can while dealing with school pressure is another part of education — that’s why there’s school clubs, festivals, and most importantly, why you’re set in one class and not any others.
  • That’s why it was cool to see Tsugumi showcase the side of education that was fun…for her at least! There aren’t a lot of people who would prepare intensely for a school festival play, but that’s what she finds comforting — coming up with stage plays, descriptions of all her classmates and what part they should play, etc. Of course, she may be a bit naive when it comes to friendships with her class, but at the same time, it’s something that people should try to do actually, since you’ll be spending a lot of time of them in school.

FUJI-SAN SO BROKEN

  • So, I know it totally seems like Miyaji is the air gun shooter, especially since she A) is never in class for some reason no one wants to talk about B) she’s appeared in some random places during the series and it calls into question her character C) she was the one who told Onizuka about the row of students on the 3F and them getting shot with an air gun. It still feels a bit too easy to peg her as the one who did that. I think there are still a few characters who haven’t shared the spotlight that might be the eventual cause of Class 2-A’s slide into drama. BUT, with all that said…it is nice that it seems we’ll know just who the heck she actually is, and her role in all this.
  • And while I doubt this gets explained in next week’s episode, it would be nice to find out more about Onizuka’s friend who died. There was a character in the original GTO manga Onizuka had referenced — I believe when he was in the hospital towards the end — that GTO 2014 could potentially talk about, but I don’t have high hopes for that. But while the manga series doesn’t play a huge role in GTO 2014, it’s nice to get smallish nods in there whenever possible. At least so I can point them out.

  • …On the other hand, I do expect this to play out a little bit longer next week instead of this week. Ayana has now told Kuzuki that she is pregnant…and she’s 4 months along. That’s not good. Now who knows what’s gonna happen with this. And the worst part (for those two at least) is nobody knows! And Onizuka’s gonna be dealing with a different sort of issue, so this getting piled on top of that will be fun for him for sure! …Assuming he will be told this anytime soon!
