Because I’m the Doctor.
Last week on Glasslip, we were introduced to Touko and the others, all one close group of friends who all live in one very pretty coastal town. Then a transfer student, Kakeru, arrives to sour their summer break fun.
Summary of Glasslip Episode 2
- Kakeru asks Touko to meet somewhere to discuss his ability to ‘hear’ the future. He also claims that Touko can ‘see’ the future as well, with the help of the glass she makes. Her friends already are skeptic and frustrated at his sudden arrival into town, and his mysterious interest with Touko; Yukinari and Sachi especially. The unwritten rule of no dating within the group is lifted, so Yanagi contemplates on whether to confess to Yukinari, Hiro already wants to confess to Sachi, but then suddenly, Yukinari confesses to Touko, with Yanagi watching. Worrying what to do, Touko asks Kakeru for help.
My Take
- Love is in the air now. Everywhere. And it’s actually rather funny watching these 5 wrestling with their feelings and emotions. He loves her, she loves him, and so on. I can draw a diagram if you want: one big love pentagram that’s up there with yuri shows. And it’s all Kakeru’s fault. If it weren’t for this douche, these 5 kids would have a happy summer break, go back to school, draw more chickens, graduate, but it’ll be okay cos they’re BFF. After the total boredom that was the last episode, things have started to get better. Now thanks to Touko saying that their ‘no-dating-allowed’ rule should be lifted, this summer break of theirs might get interesting, and make Glasslip a better show to watch. Well, that’s what I’m hoping anyway. Her decision stems from Yanagi telling her she likes Yukinari, but this sudden decision of Touko’s is easy to see though; she’s already got her eyes on Kakeru, much to the disgust of Yukinari, who’s already on a frantic mission to beat him and whisk Touko away into the sunset.
- And now in Episode 2, it’s become clear to me that the only characters I actually like are the girls. Touko’s the adorable yet domineering airhead, Sachi’s the quiet, silent and kind of childlike glasses girl, and Yanagi’s just one of those atypical girls you see in school anime shows; the ones who leave love letters in shoe lockers of the boys in their class they like. But if I had to pick one of them, it would definitely be Sachi. Here’s was me thinking she’d be completely in the background…
Couple number 5.
- Even after the end of Episode 1, and him having more screen time in this episode, Kakeru has become more of a punching bag now; not just for Yukinari and Sachi, but for me too. But I couldn’t stop laughing at his best chat-up lines in this episode. So now he tells her he can hear the future, and she can see it, he gives her his number. Touko’s an airhead so she, unfortunately, can’t understand how silly his pick-up lines sounded like. But this whole thing is the central part of the story. Now I know that the puppydog Yukinari is starting to growl, and Sachi is turning slightly yandere, I’m not sure whether to focus more on the ‘future’ part of the show, or everything else.
I’m a Companion now.
- With the lack of emotion that was Episode 1, and even with this episode, I’m starting to believe that all the characters in this show (the gang of five, future boy, Touko’s family, everyone…) will carry on acting the way they are throughout the entire show. It certainly looks like the Doctor has more up his sleeve to ruin the group’s fun and split everyone up. Yukinari has his…well, he likes to think he can beat up Kakeru when he obviously can’t, so instead he just frowns a lot. At least yandere Sachi has a can of mace and a sharp knife in her cute little backpack.
- One thing I have noticed is how stupid and oblivious Hiro is. He’s desperate to win Sachi’s heart (which won’t happen because she’s smart ‘n’ stuff, plus she wants Touko), and strangely enough, he has no idea why his fellow friends show so much animosity towards Kakeru. It’s kind of comforting then that he’s the one with the least screen time. It’s almost like he’s the character in any show that people easily poke fun at. So the mystery is this: shall we see more of him that they’re all allowed to date now? He’s easily the weakest character though, so he can hide away in his room and work on silly little ways to confess while nobody cares.
Not again, Mom!
- But chicken is here to stay in this show. It’s turned into Morning Rescue!

I’m British, and live about an hour outside of London. My first encounter in anime was with bargain bin DVDs at my local rental store, but it was only until around another 5 years later when anime took over me properly...so to speak. I used to turn to fantasy shows a lot (including magical girl shows) but now I’m more of a sucker for school and slice-of-life shows. Don’t even turn to me when it comes to mecha; can’t stand it. I’m also a Final Fantasy 14 addict. And I’m allergic to mushrooms.Latest posts by Neomo (see all)
