Durarara!! has been gone for like five years. What’s the deal with that!?
- Okay, so It’s been just a little over five years since the first season of Durarara!! started airing. Throughout the years since the first season ended its run, I’ve been anxiously waiting for a follow-up to be made. It’s not like they have a limited amount of source material, and it’s not like there wasn’t any public interest in the series (I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again; the first season is basically my favorite anime ever). So it perplexed me as to why we’ve waited for four and a half years for this to finally happen, but since it’s finally here, I don’t think I should be complaining, especially since this season is starting off pretty strong. But the good news doesn’t stop there; apparently, this season is one of three seasons that will be aired between now and January of 2016, making season 2 a three-part endeavor. Cool!
- Anyway, this season starts off half a year after the events of the previous season. Instead of focusing on Kida and Ryuugamine, this time the focus seems to shifts to Celty and Shinra, at least in the first episode. Just like the first season, I’ll take a bet that each character gets a couple of episodes that focus on them and their personal stories, which makes it nearly impossible to guess where the story being set up is going to go. I think it’s a good idea to talk more about these two, especially since they’re now in some sort of relationship… or something more, like marriage, but not really? It’s hard to explain.
- From this episode, it seems that there’s going to be a greater focus on Celty instead of the gang war, which was the main focus of the first season. I’m sure that in the next few episodes, we’ll get up to speed on what’s been happening to all of the main characters over the past half year. It’ll be nice to see how all of their lives intertwine like in the previous season, but it would also be a nice thing if the focus stayed more on Celty and the legend of her existence.
Typing in English? Man, Celty must be pissed or something
- For a first episode, this was very sporadic. Unlike the first episode of the first season, which was all about Ryuugamine moving to Tokyo with Shinra showing him around and introducing him to all the colorful locals, the first episode of the second season seemed to have no real plot other than just showing the audience that there’s a killer on the loose and that Celty is becoming more famous due to her enigmatic nature. It didn’t seem to be as enjoyable as I would have hoped, but it was still very fine for a fan of the series. This should go without saying, but yes, I think it’s essential that you watch the first season before delving in to this one. GO DO IT.
- The plot does eventually show up, however. It seems that not only is there a serial killer on the loose, but there’s also a biker gang that’s been chasing Celty. On top of that, Shinra’s parents, who are new to the series, have been doing research on Celty and paying her quite handsomely. So from what I can gather based on the first episode, the main plot will be about the serial killer, and the subplots of Celty having a bounty on her head (pun definitely not intended) and her being studied will intertwine somehow. Only time will tell.
Oh, baby! We already have some fan service!
- I admit, the first episode is a bit confusing. We see all of the characters we’ve grown to love come back to some degree in the fist episode already, even though some of them didn’t have any speaking parts whatsoever. I’m also unaware of when this arc takes place in the light novel (nor have I ever read any of the light novels), so I can’t spoil it for myself in that way. All I can really say about this episode, as vague as it was, is that it seems to be setting up something big and interesting. I can’t wait to see where this is taken to!
