Based on the true story of an American woman who became trapped in Iran when making a visit with her husband and daughter, something he had planned all along?
⭐️⭐️
Betty Mahmoody had lived a good life with her Iranian doctor husband “Moody” and their daughter Mahtob. He was having a tough time with comments being made about him in another hospital he was working at and with this stress and strain he managed to convince Betty that they would go to Iran for a holiday and that they would be safe.
It very quickly became evident that he had planned it all along for them not to be able to leave and return to the America, this is when eveything becomes frustrating and tough not only for Betty but as a viewer as well. He once loving and caring husband had changed into a totally different person, he was not beating her and move of countries meant that the dynamics of the relationship had massively changed.
Being trapped it was very tough for Betty to be able to get any help or support, and finding out she had no rights being married to an Iranian man was heartbreaking. Especially when she could leave but would not be able to take her daughter with her.
I guess it was quite tough to watch and being a story from the 1980s it did constantly make me wonder if things have really changed and what the actual real story was to these events as well, which naturally you look up after.
Let’s face it though I watched this film due to the amazing Sally Field and come on she deserves so much credit for all of her different roles doesn’t she! Alfred Molina opposite her was always going to create some decent scenes. Overall though this film other than Field doesn’t have a massive amount going for it.
