Purchased in 1948 for a price of $4,000 each, the Swiss Air Force acquired 130 P-51 Mustangs to replace obsolete Bf-109E’s and Swiss built D-3801 Morane fighters. Retired in April 1958, the P-51 would be the last piston engined fighter utilized by Swiss Air Force front-line units. This Mustang is on display at the Flieger Flab Museum (Swiss Air Force Museum) in Zurich. More than 8100 of the D-model were produced, contributing to the total of 15,000 Mustangs built for the war. After World War II, the P-51 Mustang served in the air forces of over 55 countries.
