North American NA-64 Yale

@ Lancaster, CA

May 2006

From my only visit to the now-defunct Milestones of Flight Air Museum in Lancaster. This predecessor of the classic T-6 Texan was built for the French Air Force and French Navy, served with the Royal Canadian Air Force, and even with the Luftwaffe as a captured aircraft during World War II. The French had ordered 230 aircraft originally. Of these, 111 had been delivered before France surrendered to the Germans. The 93 captured by the Luftwaffe were used for all types of flight training, from basic flying to advanced fighter tactics. The remaining 119 undelivered aircraft were bought up by the British and transferred to the RCAF, like this example. Panasonic FZ30 photo.
