Following the positive reception of last year’s revived Nokia 3310, Nokia are planning to bring back the sliding Nokia 8110 – made famous by a scene in the first Matrix movie, where Keanu Reeve’s character received the phone in a mysterious package.
The phone was groundbreaking upon its release in 1996, with an ergonomic curved shape and its satisfying sliding mouthpiece. But it really took off three years later, when it prominently featured in a scene in the groundbreaking scifi thriller.
The 21st century iteration of the phone is hoping to cash-in on some of that nostalgia. The new version will feature 4G connectivity and simplified versions of Facebook, Twitter, the Google Assistant, maps and emails.
HMD, the company that now owns Nokia, is pitching the 8110 as an ideal “weekend phone” that will keep you connected whilst avoiding the kind of distractions associated with fully-featured smartphones – giving you the “chance to switch off, have fun and relax in the knowledge that all your smartphone essentials are there when you need them”.
The new Nokia 8110 will be available in May.
