Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said that no untrained teachers will be deployed to teach in primary education sector hereafter.
He pointed out that as revealed in a survey regarding the disruptions caused to the education activities of primary class students due to the closure of schools during the past Covid-19 disaster, untrained teachers working as primary teachers has also led to the decline in the quality of primary education.
The Minister stated this while participating in the national programme organized jointly by the Education Ministry and UNICEF aiming to ensure quality primary education.
The minister said that untrained teachers will not be employed in primary education in the future and that untrained primary teachers who are currently in schools will be trained.
It was further said that the Education ministry will launch a formal programme to complete the qualifications and training of all teachers related to the field of primary education. The Minister stated that the process will be carried out within a standardized framework by holding relevant short and long term training sessions and workshops with the support of UNICEF using the existing human and physical resources and institutions in the education system. He also said that steps will be taken to make the necessary updates for the development of the primary education sector and it should start with a formal classification of schools.
Accordingly, the minister also said that within a classification of schools with an international standard of transparency that is understood by all as primary, junior secondary and senior secondary, the transfer of teachers related to the primary field will be possible only in that field.
He said that by doing so, primary education students will have equal opportunities to learn from teachers with similar training opportunities and the teacher placement process will also be easier.
