ABOUT THE BOOK:

Anna Graves’s whole life has recently been turned upside down. A new mother, she’s just gone back to her job as a radio presenter and is busy navigating a new schedule of late night feeding and early morning wake ups while also dealing with her newly separated husband. Then the worst happens. While Anna is walking on the beach with her daughter, she’s attacked by a crazed teenager. Terrified, Anna reacts instinctively to protect her baby.
But her life falls apart when the schoolboy dies from his injuries. The police believe Anna’s story, until the autopsy results reveal something more sinister. A frenzied media attack sends Anna into a spiral of self-doubt. Her precarious mental state is further threatened when she receives a chilling message from someone claiming to be the “Ophelia Killer,” a serial killer who preyed on the town twenty years ago—and who abruptly stopped when Anna’s father committed suicide.
Is Anna as innocent as she claims? And is murder forgivable, if committed to save your child’s life? Internationally bestselling author Tracy Buchanan takes readers on an emotional roller coaster ride filled with heart-stopping secrets and hairpin turns in No Turning Back, her US debut.

MY REVIEW:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
No Turning Back by Tracy Buchanan is a 2017 Crooked Lane publication.
This is a solid  British mystery, with a unique premise.
Newly divorced, single mom, Anna, has only just returned to work after the birth of her daughter, when while taking a walk, she is attacked by a teenage boy. Thinking only of her daughter’s safety she kills her attacker.
Once the story makes headlines, Anna begins receiving emails from a notorious serial killer, connected to her father’s investigations as a journalist.
Was Anna truly protecting her daughter? Were her actions necessary? Has a long dormant killer resurfaced or is someone toying with Anna?
The story bounces back and forth the between the perspective of an alleged serial killer and Anna’s battle to keep her life from spiraling out of control.
Although the characterizations were a little weak, and one may have to suspend belief just a little here and there, and some areas needed be fleshed out and firmed up a bit,  but I think the story is original, and has one whale of a twist, I did not see coming.
The author did do a good job of creating doubt about Anna, which made me wonder if she were reliable. This added an additional layer of suspense to an already tense atmosphere.
I admit I didn’t start reading this book with any preconceived expectations, and so I was pleasantly surprised by how absorbing it was.
Although the book has a few minor issues,  it is a nice little gem and I am glad I discovered it through several Goodreads friends. This book is the author's US debut novel and I for one think she shows a lot of promise. I will be keeping my eye out for more of her work in the future!!
