No Seiyuu No Life: Yuuki Kaji

Posted on the 12 August 2015 by Kaminomi @OrganizationASG

My life in Japan is still going as good as ever. The sun shines, I feel like dying ever time I go out but I moved to a place where I can see Sky Tree and am going to the beach every week-end. You can hardly do worse…

But enough about me, let’s move on to today’s main piece, mainly, Yuuki Kaji.

No Seiyuu No Life: Yuuki Kaji
Known for: Eren Jeager (Attack on Titan)

My favorite: Walker Yumasaki (Durarara!!)

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that I have discovered Yuuki Kaji in Durarara!!. Unlike in many of his other roles, in Durarara!! he voices a guy who is neither the main character, nor does he even have any real importance in the whole series. Yet, somehow, he did his best and gave him a real presence. Again, unlike many of his other roles, Walker is a sadist. And an otaku. And I loved what he did with Walker.

Unfortunately, my love for him didn’t last very long.

I am not very complicated, only very few people ever get on my nerves, especially if they’re good. And Yuuki Kaji is good. I mean he can obviously voice many different kind of people. He did Walker who is half comical relief half sadist, he did Eren in Attack on Titan who is as typical a shounen character as you can get with the mandatory shouting and all that. He also can voice serious main characters like he did in Black Bullet. He can voice other sadists like he did in Diabolik Lovers and he can also voice normal comical relief like he did in Black Butler.

Yet, I lost my love for him.

At some point I even felt like I didn’t want to hear him again, ever. And this comes from a very simple fact, mainly, did you notice how he has been everywhere lately ?

I know this comes directly from the success of Attack on Titan and this is a good thing for his career, especially since, again, he is really good. Unfortunately, it also means he often gets to voice the same type of character, mainly, the main character who has tendencies to be a hero and want to save everyone and this can become really boring really fast.

When you look at his major recent roles you will notice this too. Ever since Eren Yuuki Kaji has voiced the hero in Black Bullet, also the hero in World Trigger. Sadly, being the hero it means you hear him at every single episode doing the very same kind of voice in every anime he is cast in. And seriously this is boring.

So this is a cry for help. Yuuki Kaji I love you, you’re talented but please tell your agency you want to audition for more diverse roles or I’ll start avoiding everything you’re in!
