Smartphones are becoming more and more important in people’s lives, and their security systems are becoming more important. One of the pillars of smartphone security is the fingerprint scanner. This feature is now available in all phones from premium to entry level. There are several types of fingerprint scanners, one of which is the in-display fingerprint sensor. In-display fingerprint scanners on smartphones have been in use for several years. Moreover, there are currently two technologies – ultrasonic and optical scanners – and both are used for biometric authentication. But being expensive, ultrasonic scanners are usually found in premium flagships. Sources claim that companies like Oppo, Realme, and OnePlus are now turning to this sensor to improve security.

Oppo, OnePlus and Realme phones will feature ultra-sonic fingerprint scanners in the future

Tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) reported that Oppo, OnePlus and Realme are working on adding ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanners to their devices. If all goes well, the brand’s future flagship devices could see this technology replacing the optical fingerprint scanner.

Currently, handsets like Samsung Galaxy S23 series, iCo 12 Pro, Meizu 21/21 Pro – include ultrasonic in-display scanners. According to a report, the Xiaomi 15 series to be launched this year with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor will use Goodix’s single-point ultrasonic fingerprint scanner technology. It is said to be in the testing phase at the moment.

Note that when a finger is pressed on the display to unlock the screen, ultrasonic fingerprint scanners create a 3D map of the fingerprint using ultrasonic sound waves below the screen. This technology provides more security and reduces the possibility of counterfeiting.

However, ultrasonic fingerprint scanners are expensive to manufacture and the process is quite complex compared to optical fingerprint scanners. Optical fingerprint scanners, on the other hand, are cheaper and safer and use light to take 2D images of fingerprints. So if future Oppo, OnePlus and Realme phones use ultrasonic scanners, expect the price to increase slightly.
