Nina Simone birth house in North Carolina has been recognized as a national treasure.
On Tuesday, the house was named a “National Treasure” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in 1933, Simone taught herself to play piano in the home. it is also where she grew up experiencing the severe restrictions of the Jim Crow south.

She passed away in 2003, at the age of 70.
