I am not surprised by the negative and racist comments being posted online about Nina Davuluri, the newly-crowned Miss America 2014. No one should be surprised. Unfortunately, we still live in a world where much of the population lives in ignorance. We also live in a world where fair skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes are deemed the most beautiful of traits by many people. If this is your mindset, then I totally understand why Davuluri winning the Miss America crown has pissed you off. A dark-skinned, dark-haired, brown-eyed woman has shattered your world.
Boo freaking hoo.It is the year 2014. The United States of America is inhabited by people of all colors, religions, shapes and sizes. Davuluri was born in Syracuse, New York. She then moved to Oklahoma as a little girl and, eventually, Michigan where she attended the University of Michigan. None of this matters to the racist people of America who take to Twitter to share their idiocy with the world. In their minds, if you aren’t white, you aren’t American so go back to your country!
Some of the people who find Davuluri’s winning Miss America to be an abomination have decided to drag Theresa Vail (Miss Kansas 2014) into this mess. They claim that her service in the National Guard and her love of tattoos make her a “real American”; thus, she should have been crowned Miss America 2014. Oh, and she is white, blonde, and has blue eyes. How convenient!
It saddens me that the story associated with Davuluri’s win is that a lot of people in America are bothered by it. The story should be that this is a great thing for this country. Davuluri winning is a positive for the millions of little girls across America who are also of Indian descent or Asian American and have always felt that they aren’t beautiful.
