Night Shooting In Porto, Without A Tripod

By Gail Aguiar @ImageLegacy

I do own a tripod — hefted here from Canada — but it would take a dedicated evening of long exposures to persuade me to carry it around. Tonight wasn’t one of those nights, as it turned out, it was handheld all the way…

I went to Porto in the afternoon to attend a screening of the 2008 documentary “The World According to Monsanto” by Marie-Monique Robin, who was present at Cinema Passos Manuel to discuss a series of her films showing there for Cinema Com Terra. My plan was to go early, buy the tickets for three of us going, then shoot around the neighbourhood before the film. But the plan went a bit sideways and I didn’t get as much time to shoot before the film as I’d wanted. By the time we left the cinema, Blue Hour was fading into murky darkness. The one shot I caught with a hint of blue was Garagem Passos Manuel.

The pictures of Clérigos Tower and the Lions Fountain were taken while I was waiting for the bus as the Old Lady on my way home, while the streets were filling up with kids just getting their Friday night started. All five shots are completely handheld, and four of them have the ISO pushed up to 800. The only one at ISO 200 is the one above, the camera sitting atop an iron fence.

Next time: add a tripod and some drinks!
