There is so much tension between the Black American community and Africans in general because we are too ethnocentric to understand each other.
Guess what??

Comparing Nigerian men to Black-American men is like comparing an orange to a different grade of orange. Collectively, we can all agree that there are cultural differences between these two groups. To accurately understand Nigerian Men, we need to understand the Nigerian culture and the same goes for black American men. It is wise to have a basic understanding of these two group’s culture.

There is a Nigerian culture and Black-American culture. Culture has a way of influencing people’s life perception, belief system, behavior and etc. The way people allow culture to influence their lives is subjective. People have their individual culture amidst a wide broad culture. The focus should be on a person’s individual mentality shaped by his or her culture, environment, background and more. For example, in a choir, there’s a collective sound made by individual voices. The same goes for culture, we have a Nigerian or Black-American culture in the midst of that is our own individual culture.

Culture affects each individual differently. When you meet a person from a different culture do not allow your preconceived knowledge of a culture halt you from understanding this individual’s culture or mentality. Have a general knowledge of their culture and determine how much of their culture have influence on this person’s personal mentality or culture.

man (Nigerian or Black American) is going to have a different type of mentality because we all have different experiences and cultural influences. Stereotypes are a threat to an accurate understanding of each individual person.
In conclusion, an individual’s personal culture and mentality should override your broad knowledge of a Black American or Nigerian culture. We need to learn to understand the person for who they are. People are affected by culture in different ways. The way culture influences each person is truly a mystery. Nigerian men are not all the same and the same goes for Black American men. Don’t make a conclusion on any person until you have the full knowledge of who they are.
