New iOS 7 SDK by Smart AdServer: Get Ready for iOS 7 !

Posted on the 18 September 2013 by Smartadblog @SmartAdServerEN

As Apple announced last Tuesday, today is the official launch of  iOS 7,  the iPhone 5C & 5s will be available on September, 20. iOS What’s new?

For users

The most notable iOS 7 features include a new screen layout and controller management (namely, the status bar and navigation bar) and, once again, a new architecture, specially designed for the iPhone 5S (last year, a new architecture, armv7s, was introduced for the iPhone 5 launch). This new 64-bit architecture will make highly CPU-intensive operations quicker to process without noticeable lag, such as heavy image processing or mobile video gaming.

For developers

This new iOS version also implies a new version of Xcode for developers: Xcode 5,both iOS 7 and 64-bit compatible. From now on, you’ll need to use design or rebuild apps in this new environment to submit any app to the Apple’s App Store.

Which will be the impact on Smart AdServer clients?

Will my app and SDKs run fine on iOS 7?

If you don’t publish it on the App Store, your current apps built for iOS 6 will work without bugging (in most of the cases), and so will your current Smart AdServer’s SDK.

But if you submit a new release to the App Store, you may face layout issues for its content and ads (for example, display issues with the post-click modal view).

If I were to rebuild my app for iOS 7, do I necessarily need to use the new 64 bit-architecture?

No, you don’t. There’s no rush, only apps using a lot of calculation would be really impacted by the 64-bit architecture (for instance, gaming apps and camera-based apps). You should only consider this in the coming months,  as   any app not 64-bit compatible will force the system to load the 2 architectures (32-bit and 64-bit) for all the apps present on an iPhone, which will consume more memory.

Which SDK should I use in my new iOS 7 apps?

If your’re using the current 32-bit armv7 architecture:

A new iOS 7 compliant SDK (version 4.2) has been launched a couple of days ago and can be used in an app that has to be rebuilt in Xcode 5 without the 64-bit architecture support.

If you need to use the new 64-bit armv8 architecture:

A 64-bit iOS 7 SDK (version 4.2.1) will be available at the very beginning of October.

Last but not least…

A new version of the iOS Smart AdServer Dashboard, cumpliant with iOS 7 and integrating the new iOS7 SDK has been published in the App Store, it will be available in the App Store in the very next days!
