Marc Andreyko. If you ask me he is the perfect choice for the job. He is an openly gay comic book writer. Which wouldn’t(and shouldn’t) usually matter except for the fact that DC has had quite a bit of grief over some of the more public reasons as to why the current creative team left. So immediately the fact that the new writer is gay himself should stop a lot, if not most, of the homophobia speculation and name calling DC has received.
DC has claimed they have a “no marriage” policy for all of their heroes. Stating that it “ages the characters”. The decision to hold off on a wedding between Kate and her fiancé Maggie had nothing to do with their genders and was more of a company wide policy. Take that for what its worth, but other well known couples are also no longer together such as Clark and Lois.
Marc is no stranger to DC, as he wrote a long run on Manhunter. He is also no stranger to darker story telling as he also wrote a prequel comic based on the movie Let Me In. To me he sounds like an inspired choice all around. As I had stated in the past about Batwoman, every fiber in me wanted to love the book. The art is fantastic. FANTASTIC. But that is really where the compliments end for me after the first 5 or so issues after the reboot. The book has really suffered because of story telling that takes forever to go no where. It also bothered me how removed from the Bat-family Kate and Batwoman have been. Living in Gotham and operating under the Bat mantle seems like you are begging for at least some crossover action…but we have seen none. That will all change with all of the zero-year crossovers. As Batwoman will be apart of that event in December. What a great way for Marc to arrive and show his new direction for the character. I for one am really excited for the new team to take over, and see what they can do with such a great charter.
