Netflix offers to escape into space with films from space opera, in order to offer a little change of scenery to its subscribers.
Sony Pictures Releasing France The Chronicles of Riddick
After Pitch Black (2000), Vin Diesel returns as Richard B. Riddick to offer an even crazier adventure! At the time, Vin Diesel went into debt (see our interview below) and refused to appear in 2 Fast 2 Furious, as well as in XXX2 to make the film, which saw Riddick fly to space. The Necromongers conquer planet after planet by the strong way and it is called in order to put an end to this flood of violence. With a much higher budget than Pitch Black, the director offers an epic action show, which does not forget his script on the way. Real space opera!
Note that the animated short The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury links Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, but it is not essential.
Dune
If it is not artistically what David Lynch wanted to make of it (its assembly was cut by one hour and reworked), Dune remains none the less interesting and faithful to the essence of the novels of Frank Herbert. As a reminder, in the film, the emperor Shaddam IV reigns over the universe but feels threatened by the mysterious power of the Atreides. He therefore takes the decision to exterminate this proud and valiant people living on the planet Dune. But Paul, heir to the Atreides, escapes the massacre. The work and its themes are there and, despite some dated effects, we can say that there remains the David Lynch style in this feature film (notably by some metaphysical moments) and that the universe of the book is well transcribed. But everyone will make their opinion, pending the version of Denis Villeneuve at the end of the year.
Interstellar
In a land devastated by overconsumption, Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) lives alone with his two children (Tom and Murphy) and their grandfather. When he realizes that someone or something is trying to communicate with him, he will conduct his investigation, assisted by Murphy, and go into space, in search of an expedition, sent through a wormhole to find planets habitable by humans. The richness of the film comes from the staging and the subject of Christopher Nolan (co-written with his brother Jonathan). Difficult to talk about the film without revealing crucial points, so we will content ourselves with saying that the film is poignant, surprising, and visually magnificent. In addition, there is Jessica Chastain and Timothée Chalamet in a small role.
Life: Unknown origin
Hunted down in a ship! This is the principle of the film carried by Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds. Aboard the International Space Station, the six crew members discover the very first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As they deepen their research, their experiences will have unintended consequences, and of course, the revealed life form will prove to be much smarter than they thought. On this starting point which recalls another film, Life: Unknown Origin offers a scary camera behind the height of its predecessor which, if it had not been worn by a promising director (Daniel Espinosa) and such an enticing cast , may have been less well received than when it was released.
Star Trek Into Darkness
The second installment in the Star Trek saga relaunched by J.J. Abrams, Into Darkness sees the crew of the Enterprise destroyed by terrorist forces. Kirk (Chris Pine), more isolated than ever, begins a revenge to neutralize the person responsible for this massive destruction. This new adventure continues its path in the footsteps of the Star Trek released four years earlier, and offers an effective blockbuster, focusing above all on the action and the charisma of the villain's interpreter, Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, Sherlock). A great show to enjoy with the family (from 13 years old).
