Netflix Is Done With Kevin Spacey

The Wrong Saga Of Kevin Spacey” continues, and many industry trades are reporting that Netflix has officially severed all ties with Kevin Spacey, who stands accused of having sexually harassed and/or sexually assaulted a whole bunch of dudes (two of them reportedly 14 at the time). What this means for House of Cards is that, if they even complete and air their final season, you’re more likely to see Kate Mara’s thrown-in-front-of-a-subway-train character magically come back to life than any trace of Kevin’s President Frank Underwood. He’s been officially “suspended” from the show, and they’ve canceled a planned Gore Vidal bio-pic with him. Yet, mom’s boyfriend from hell Woody Allen and Scientology’s accused rapist Danny Masterson are still lurking about on Netflix. Hmmm.

The Hollywood Reporter has the official “Kevin Spacey has been escorted out by security” statement from Netflix.

“Netflix will not be involved with any further production of House of Cards that includes Kevin Spacey. We will continue to work with MRC during this hiatus time to evaluate our path forward as it relates to the show,” a representative for the streamer said in a statement Friday. “We have also decided we will not be moving forward with the release of the film Gore, which was in postproduction, starring and produced by Kevin Spacey.”

Not to be outdone, Media Rights Capital released their own “Hi Kevin, this is Jenn in HR. Would you mind stopping by my office? Thanks!” blurb.

“While we continue the ongoing investigation into the serious allegations concerning Kevin Spacey’s behavior on the set of House of Cards, he has been suspended, effective immediately. MRC, in partnership with Netflix, will continue to evaluate a creative path forward for the program during the hiatus,” the company stated.

But what of House of Cards? The silly political intrigue drama was one of Netflix’s first, and very successful, forays into original programming. Its shine had dimmed in its later seasons, but they gave us all a role model for life in Robin Wright’s FLOTUS character Claire Underwood. Just try and find me a person who hasn’t worked a smart Givenchy suit while threatening a pregnant woman’s baby and allowing your husband to sleep with his Secret Service detail by now. Variety says that if they continue the show, Frank Underwood might take a dirt nap.

One scenario being discussed is to kill off Spacey’s character, the villainous Frank Underwood, and have the show’s sixth and final season concentrate on his equally manipulative wife Claire, played by Robin Wright, according to insiders.

Netflix is said to find working any further with Kevin Spacey “untenable,” especially due to the recent CNN story about him making HOC a “toxic environment” due to his alleged predilection for “play fighting” with the young men on the production. But there’s also over 300 people involved in the production who would suddenly be out a job if HOC shut down prematurely.

The feeling is that they did nothing wrong and should not be penalized for Spacey’s behavior. The show has just started filming, so the sense is that Spacey’s character could be safely written out without too many logistical hurdles.

Claire has always been the real power of the show. So, if they can work past the stench left by its former lead, she could totally run the place. Do any of us HOC fans think that Claire would have a problem with having her husband killed if it meant advancing her plan to become Empress of Earth?
