Netflix Instant Play Gems

The movies on Netflix instant play can be hit or miss, but here are a few I’ve watched recently that were quite entertaining. Happy Friday!

John Mulaney: New in Town – As someone who finds overly crass or vulgar stand up comedians really grating, John Mulaney is my new favorite funny person. Not only is his self-deprecating nice guy act filled with hilarious impressions and tidbits of his life, but he also has a charmingly awkward demeanor that makes me wish we were friends in real life.

The Mind of a Chef – Foodies, put this on your list! This 16-episode series follows David Chang, founder of the uber popular Momofuku restaurants, as he goes on crazy cooking/traveling adventures with his chef friends. I never knew much about him prior to watching this, but I immediately liked him when he dined on fancy gourmet meals and munched on his favorite childhood snack (raw instant ramen noodles sprinkled with the seasoning packet) with the same exact amount of enthusiasm. His lack of pretension is delightful, and he just comes across as someone who is having an absolute blast doing work that he loves!

Somm – I know very little about wine, aside from the fact that it is tasty, so getting a glimpse into the world of wine connoisseurs was really interesting. In this documentary, 4 sommeliers prepare themselves to pass the grueling 3-day Master Sommelier exam, which has one of the lowest pass rates in the world. Their passion borders on obsession, and it’s incredible to see how honed their senses of taste and smell are – to the point where they can take a sip of wine and break down its background bit by bit back to its place of origin like a bunch of wine drinking superheroes.

Side Effects – Side Effects is a psychological thriller where Rooney Mara is prescribed antidepressant pills after a suicide attempt, and they cause her to experience some horrific…wait for it…side effects. This is one of those movies where you think you know what’s going on, before everything gets turned upside down, and then you’re like ok NOW I know what’s going on for reals, but nope, more twists ahead!
