Neomo’s Otaku Theater: Charlotte Episode 6Dem eyes.
  • Why was I reminded of Akira in this episode……?
  • Well we didn’t have to eat humble pie this week. Anitwitter is usually spot-on, and it seems like they got this one nailed. Ayumi has pretty much become a character that has split us all in two: either we feel incredible pity for her with her uber-moe eyes and her passion for pizza sauce, or we feel incredible annoyance for being an atypical little imouto who constantly talks in third-person. Of course I fall into the former, and I’d imagine so would a lot of people at this stage of the show. While we’ve been fretting with background invisible people using rather harmless powers for their own gain, we now have something on a much much larger scale, and even with the cliffhanger in this episode, we have absolutely no idea of what possibly could happen next week, or in the remaining half of the show.
  • I think it’s excellent that Studio Key have no qualms about bringing darkness, the potential of violence and bloody death, and anything that isn’t overtly cute and such in their anime adaptations. Sure enough their visual novels were all eroge, but so many of us seem to know KyoAni’s versions of Kanon and Clannad, and Nagisa Furukawa singing ‘Dango Daikazoku’ (and we immediately feel the feels). Or perhaps it’s just me seeing this refreshing change to their adaptations. Here with the possibility of Ayumi having what could potentially be a very dangerous ability, we can better understand Nao’s worry, and her somewhat personal mission to find these kids and stop them in whatever way they can to using their abilities so that they won’t fall victim to the same fate she and her brother had. And so now she sees the possibility of Ayumi’s ability being both happy prey to scientists and a danger to herself and the public, her mission has only become all the more important, since she’s become so acquainted with her and Yuu.

  • And despite the mass wave of sarcasm and cynicism that has hit us and our kids in this age, we clearly don’t want an innocent middle-schooler to suffer. Then again what am I to say? In past games/shows, kids lose their memories, have terminal illnesses, are ghosts/spirits, have horrible childhoods and disturbing pasts…and this is all done in the name of the feels. Studio Key has always wanted us to feel sorry for the girls we choose in the games they make; it’s like an absolute. It works of course, and it’s what has made them not only unique and influential, but highly successful. Just hearing the studio name in the gaming sector in Japan will tell you exactly the kind of ride you’ll be expecting. And to think they still have a load of games that need to be adapted…cue the waterworks.

  • And now thanks to said cliffhanger, we don’t know what can happen between our new couple, who are pretty much your average anime couple in how they much prefer to hide their true feelings. But then if sibling love is more important for both of them, there’s really no room for romance. We will never ever see these two confess or kiss or something, but to be honest do we really need to see them? The couple has been established and we can happily be entertained by their constant denial. ]
  • And as for poor imouto? Well none of us want the worst to happen, although we know it mostly likely will. As for what of poor Yuu? We could seriously have anything in the next episode…anything from Ayumi developing Herculean strength and pulling herself and Yuu out of that rubble (but not that crazy kid with the boxcutter), to just her disappearing and leaving Yuu in a sea of misery and despair, to just sheer luck. Personally? I’m going for the sheer luck option, but I’m only being optimistic. It’s been so long since I’ve been on such a cliffhanger where I have next to no idea on what could possibly happen in the next episode. Jun Maeda has become a name not dissimilar to Gen Urobuchi, where we can take a guess on the plot and the characters and expect unhappy/sad/tearjerker endings, with at least one (if not all) character dying. The bookie’s favorite is Ayumi…and it really does seem that way now, halfway into Charlotte.

  • I genuinely cannot wait until next week; that’s something I rarely say now.
