Neat Glass vs. Glencairn Glass PLUS A Review of Glenfiddich 18

On a quiet Friday night not so long ago, The West Coast Office (aka The WCO, for those in the know) and I gathered at our respective "Murder Tables" via Skype...

During today's episode of East Coast / West Coast Whisky Tasting, we review the Glenfiddich 18 and put two distinctly different spirit glasses through their paces, i.e. the Neat Spirit Glass and the Glencairn Glass. We've always been interested in trying the Neat Glass, but being the cheap bastards that we are, never plunked down our not so hard-earned cash to buy one. The two Neat Glasses used for this review were gifted to us at the first-ever Kiddushfest which we attended this past June in The Big Apple.

Since we weren't thrilled with our first go-around with The Neat Glass at Kiddushfest, we decided to re-visit it for this review of the Glenfiddich 18 to see how it stands up to our tried and true Glencairn Glass ( click these words to read what The WCO had to say about the Glencairn Glass during his intensive and DEFINITIVE whisk(e)y glassware review). Before we get to the review, here are more than a few words about each item taken directly from each producer's respective website:

Glenfiddich 18

We use fine Spanish Oloroso wood and American oak to mature this rich, intriguingly fruity and robust oak expression, but there are many more reasons why this expression is special. Every batch is individually numbered and carefully watched over. Each has extraordinary consistency and character from an intense marrying period, and a warming, distinguished finish. A truly exceptional single malt, the result not just of eighteen years of care and attention, but of whisky-making craft and knowledge passed down through the generations.

The Neat Glass

The NEAT spirits glass displays all aromas for easy detection removing nose-numbing ethanol exposing the truth about spirits quality. Whether you collect or truly enjoy spirits, NEAT enhances your experience as you savor all character aromas that define your favorite scotch whisky, bourbon whiskey, rum, tequila, gin, cognac, vodka, port, sherry, and liqueurs. Official judging glass of major competitions since 2012, choice of professionals, science built a better glass.

The Glencairn Glass

The Glencairn Whisky Glass is a revolutionary whisky glass that really lets one savor the taste and complexity of fine whisky. These are great to use for any of your Single Malt Whisky's, Irish Whiskey's, and also your single barrel bourbons. With the tapered mouth, you are able to really smell all of the nuances the whisky has to offer. Any malt advocate will love this glass!Champagne, Brandy, Wine... each has its own glass. Yet whisky, the worlds most complex spirit can be found served in anything from hi-ball tumblers to Paris goblets. In 2001 Glencairn Crystal solved the problem of identifying the ideal glass for whisky. Designed by Raymond Davidson nearly 25 years earlier, its development involved pulling together the master blenders from the five largest whisky companies and asking them to perfect his initial design. Today the Glencairn Glass can be found at every distillery in Scotland, Ireland, Wales as well as most in the USA.

Is the Glenfiddich 18 as "truly exceptional" as the distillery would have you believe?

Does The Neat Glass really "enhance your experience as you savor all character aromas that define your favorite spirit"?

Is The Glencairn Whisky Glass "a revolutionary whisky glass that really lets one savor the taste and complexity of fine whisky"?
