NBBJ Win Healthcare Design Competition for Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice (BACCH) Kuwait

Based on the wish of Abdullah, a little boy who had cancer and did not want to spend any more time in hospital,  KACCH (Kuwait Association for the care of Children in Hospital ) organized a specialized medical team to help Abdullah’s mother take care of her son at home until. He died  six months later  but  was surrounded by his family and favorite things.

This case is what actually brought forward the concept of Bayt Abdullah Children’s Hospice (BACCH). The project is to allow children with terminal conditions to be looked after at home or in the hospice itself.



The Project:

. Land : 20,000 square meters authorized by His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed and leased from the Ministry of Social Affairs for a nominal sum per annum, located in the Sulaibikhat Bay area.

Flipping through my latest Interior Design Magazine issue, I was reviewing the winning projects when I came across NBBJ’s award as “Best in Category” for Hospice care for this particular project.

About the Competition (From Editor at Large):

“Outstanding originality and excellence in the planning and design of healthcare interior spaces characterize the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) winners of the inaugural Healthcare Interior Competition. The winners of the competition were selected from over 100 submissions from around the globe by an expert panel of interior design professionals, who specialize in healthcare interiors. 

Winners were announced in four categories that included Ambulatory Care Centers, Hospice Care, Hospitals, and Senior Living & Residential Health, Care, and Support Facilities. The Best of Competition was selected from the Best of Category winners.
