Navy Nabs Suspects Attempting to Smuggle of Tendu Leaves and Insecticide

A special search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy in the sea area of Sinnapadu, Puttalam today (13th February 2024) led to the apprehension of 04 suspects attempting to smuggle in Tendu leaves weighing over 1177kg (wet weight) and 150 bottles of insecticide.

The Navy remains vigilant around the clock and conducts regular search operations and patrols to prevent the influx of illegal items into the island via sea routes.

As an extension of these efforts, SLNS Thambapanni and Rapid Action Boat Squadron carried out this special operation in the sea area of Sinnapadu today and intercepted 02 dinghies on suspicion. During subsequent search, naval personnel apprehended 04 suspects who were attempting to smuggle in about 1177kg and 600g (wet weight) of Tendu leaves in 41 sacks and 150 bottles of insecticide. Aside from that, 02 dinghies used for this illegal act were also taken into naval custody.

The suspects held in this operation were identified as residents of Kalpitiya, from 20 to 42 years of age. Meanwhile, the suspects along with the seized stock of Tendu leaves and bottles of insecticide were handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Katunayake. The 02 dinghies have been kept in the naval custody, until they are handed over to authorities for onward legal action.
