It's also an emotional make-good: on a party her mother was to throw for Juliette's nineth birthday, but was too coke up to do so. Her mother's relapse into addiction at the party is a bittersweet reminder to Juliette that all of life events is the equivialent to a game of Chutes and Ladders.
