NASA has released a satellite image showing the extent of the damage caused by the August 4th explosion in Beirut. NASA's ARIA (Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis) team worked with the Earth Observatory in Singapore at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Caltech to use synthetic materials to use aperture radar data from space for the image. The picture published on Friday shows surface changes in the region.
The tragedy in Beirut, Lebanon occurred on Tuesday. Around 150 people died and thousands more were injured when a stash of ammonium nitrate stored in the port for years appeared to cause a major explosion that could be heard as far as Cyprus.

NASA's map uses pixels of various shades of yellow and red, with the darkest red representing the worst damage in the port of Beirut. Orange pixels represent moderate damage and yellow pixels represent light damage. Each pixel is an area of approximately 33 meters.
NASA said the map can be used to pinpoint areas where help is most needed.
